Sal316 questions Kyl on CNN's Late Edition.
Edited on Sun Sep-21-03 11:48 AM by Sal316
That caller was ME! WOO HOO!'

I asked Sen. Kyl that in light of all the news the past week (Kay's report being shelved, Team 'Pox' coming up empty, Bush denying SH-9/11 link) how he could continue to justify the false pretenses given for this war?

The way Kyl just brushes everything off really gets under my skin. I missed the first part of his answer searching for my remote to turn the sound back up on the tv but managed to catch him saying that 'just because they haven't found anything doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared'. What the hell does that mean? That wasn't part of the question! Of course we have to be prepared.

:grr:

That guy just pisses me off!

2. Supercool!
I think his saw was the familiar 'absence of evidence is not evidence of absence'. Right, like your Communist past, Kyl.

5. Thanks.
I was surprised I got through. The line was busy the first 5-6 times I called. The lady at CNN took my question and number, called me back in about 2 minutes, and then put me right through.

4. High Five!!
I heard the question but didn't pay real close attention. I did notice Kyl get uncomfortable when you asked the question.

6. From what I heard, it was a non-answer.
I asked him DIRECTLY how HE could still justify the war.

"blah, blah, blah, prepared, blah, blah"....

9. I knew it was a DUer
as soon as I heard how detailed and well informed the question was posed. The first words out of Kyl's mouth were unbelievable. "Bush did not say Iraq was not involved in 9/11, just that there is no evidence that they were involved." :eyes: This is straight back to the Cheney line on MTP last week. These repukes need to get their story (read "lies") straight. Great job Sal

11. I agree
Sometimes that line is true, but in this case they have exhaustively searched for such evidence and come up empty. I would think that if there were any evidence to find, they would have found it by now (sort of like the mythical WMDs).

12. Well Done, Sal!
McCain gets all the press but Kyle is in the background pushing the admin's worst initiatives and power grabs. Nice to see him get rattled. Usually only appears before core supporters. Not used to being actually questioned. Like most repugs today, without a "script" to respond to questions their only response is Bill O'Rantly's: "Shut up! Who told you you could think?"

13. The transcript....
http://www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0309/21/le.00.html
<snip>

BLITZER: All right. We have a caller in Arizona who has a question.

Go ahead, Arizona.

CALLER: Hi, yes. Hi Senator Kyl, Senator Dodd, Wolf.

Senator Kyl, this question is for you. Considering that "Team Pox" has found no evidence of smallpox, David Kay's report has been shelved indefinitely, and President Bush has now said there's no link between 9/11 and Saddam, how can you continue to justify the false pretenses given for this war?

KYL: Well, first of all, the president did not say that there was no connection. He said we don't have any evidence of a connection. There was evidence of connection between al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, but that was never the basis for the action in Iraq. And I think most Americans support what we did in Iraq.

The question is what we're doing now and whether or not we can quickly be able to remove our own troops from the situation.

And with regard to the smallpox and other threats, I don't think there's anybody that says we shouldn't be prepared to deal with a biological threat from terrorists or a chemical threat from terrorists. The fact that those particular agents weren't found in Iraq is not evidence the United States is safe and secure from the use of those weapons by others.

14. I heard you--and did think DUer
and it was by luck because I only got to watch a little "political news today" before golfing (should have stayed and watched more). Anyway, while I have you here did you notice something on this show. Drove me nuts. I picked up a story Friday about how the Bush regime is going to go "all positive" on Iraq---i.e., telling about all the good stuff there and minimize the bad, etc. Well this asshole was reading right off the Rove script (I chuckled and said, yep, here we go). It is presented in this "the patriotic wrapper" and all that crap. But, Dodd just kinda sat there and let him get away with it. Dodd and the others know this is going to happen because it was on national news and, of course, they have to say "nice try, asshole, but let's get real about the mess we are in". With Dodd's passiveness, all I could think of was that the Dems are slipping back into their stupor. They can't let them get back "in" on this issue and b.s. the American people so that everything seems forgotten and hunky dorey (like Afghanistan) by this time next year. What was your take???

15. I think Dodd and the dems are....
...seeing the polls that public support for *'s Iraq plan is falling like a lead balloon and there isn't anything that can save it. First no WMD's (duh!) , no alQaida connection (double duh!), and now getting hammered on the $87 billion, maybe they see that the tide is turning? I'm sure some of them are afraid of the repercussions for voting for the Iraq Resolution, and that's affecting their timidity.

I can only hope, and hope is a strong word, that they're crafting a message to counter the "hunkey dorey" crap the administration is putting out. I wouldn't bet on it, though. The dems have pretty much been outmaneuvered at every turn with Iraq, and I'm sure that's made them gun-shy.

Honestly, I think it's up to people like us to keep shouting from the rooftops and not let this go the way of Afghanistan. More and more people I talk to are getting tired of * and his crap. Even the apolitical are beginning to make noise... and I really believe that's a bad sign for *.

I'm not sure what to make of Dodd, having seen him a few times. He's come across passive each time I've seen him and I'm not sure why.

16. Wonderful question Sal316
The reply on the transcript I had trouble picking up quite what he was talking about, so i guess the reply is a 'don't answer the question by confusing everybody with your answer'.

I've had that particular type of reply locally in britain about 5 years ago so i assume it is a common trick.
