Why do you hold Galloway to different standards than Trent Lott?
Galloway makes coded anti-semitic statements and praises and supports extreme anti-semitic groups like Hamas.

Trent Lott makes coded racist statements and cavorts with racist organizations like the Council of Conservative Citizens.

Many of you give Galloway the benefit of the doubt :eyes:
But no one here would say Trent Lott isn't racist, but many of you seem to think Galloway is above critiscm for doing similar things in regard to Jewish people.

Flame away now. I will not respond to any posts, supportive or negative. I am sick of people calling me a RWer because I think Galloway is repulsive :eyes: (sorry I don't march in lock step with some of you guys.).

There are many fine progressives who deserve our support more than George Galloway. Making a few silly comments to Norm Coleman is hardly worthy of the idolatry and unconditional support many DUers now show for this man. Many people are even flaming British DUers who have dealt with Mr. Galloway for more than 20 years, and are trying to tell you this guy is no saint.

Thank you and have a pleasant day. :hi:

1. How can Hamas be considered anti-Semitic?
Aren't they Semites themselves?

Hamas is anti-Israel, sure. Anti-Jew? Apparently.

But anti-Semitic? Are you saying they also hate Arabs?

By your standards, anyone who champions the cause of Palestinians is anti-Semitic, which is ridiculous, given that Palestinians are Semites.

So is Galloway taking a racial position, or a political position? Even saying he's taking a religious position would be more accurate than calling him a racist.

8. Sure, but who's playing the games?
The OP is seems to be saying that Galloway's backing of the Palestinian cause is due to racism, when by all accounts, they are the same 'race' as Semitic Jews? (if the word 'race' has any meaning at all in this context)

Do you think the Israeli/Palestinian conflict racial, political or religious in nature? If one backs the Israeli positions, does that make them anti-Arab by definition? That seems to be the converse of what the OP is saying.

Do you think that Arabs and Israelis are different 'races' or the same 'race'? If you think they are different 'races', I'd ask by what basis you've determined that. If they are the same 'race', how can you say that someone is being racist by backing one side or the other?

From what I can see, it makes about as much sense to try to cast the conflict in Northern Ireland as a 'racial' conflict.

TODAY! - Jews Protest Against Salute To 'Israel' Parade in New York
U.S. Newswire - Sun Jun 5, 8:18 AM ET

Anti-Zionist Orthodox Jews will be protesting the Salute to "Israel" parade, which celebrates the existence of the State of "Israel" being held today in New York.

They will also protest the Israel Day Concert in Central Park, which is to show support of the State of Israel and to rally against the withdrawal of the settlers from Gaza.

The Anti-Zionist Orthodox Jews will be denouncing the very existence of the State of Israel, which is strictly forbidden according to Jewish Law (the Torah).

The Torah expressly forbids the establishment of a Jewish state and commands Jews to remain in exile until released from that exile by G-d Himself, without any human intervention, at which time all nations of the world will live together in peace and serve the One G-d in harmony.

This condemnation of the State of "Israel" also encompasses all the actions committed by the State of "Israel" under the guise of Judaism, whether against the Arab Palestinian people or people of the Jewish faith.

Therefore, the Anti-Zionist Orthodox Jews proclaim that according the Torah, the State of "Israel" should be totally dismantled -- and pray that this should come about speedily and peacefully.

The protest will take place today (June 5) at 5th Ave. at the corner of 59th St. -- at 12:00 p.m.

The protest will proceed to the entrance of Central Park 5th Ave. at the corner of 97th St. -- at 3:30 p.m.

ISRAELI INDEPENDENCE DAY
A Day of Mourning for Torah Faithful Jews

While the Zionists celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the so called “state” of Israel, the worldwide Jewish community faithful to the teachings of G-d and the Torah gather to commemorate this anniversary as a day of sorrow and tragedy. Our sorrow is demonstrated by the wearing of “sackcloth” and the flying of black flags of mourning.

The founding of the Zionist state is in direct contradiction to the teachings of the Torah which forbids the establishment of a Jewish state and commands Jews to remain in exile until released from that exile by G-d Himself, without any human intervention, at which time all Nations of the world will live together in peace.

Two thousand years ago, at the time of the Temple’s destruction, the Jewish people were forbidden by the Creator (kesubos 111a)

• To go up en masse to the land of Israel
• To rebel against the nations
• To in any way attempt to end the exile

Torah faithful Jews are to behave in a civil, honest and grateful manner towards their hosts throughout the world.

The Zionist intervention against G-d’s will by establishing the “state of Israel” represents an official rebellion against G-d and the Torah, a rebellion which has generated untold pain and suffering. On the anniversary of the founding of this heretical Zionist state, true Torah Jews mourn the attempt to transform Judaism from a religion into a secular entity and the attempt to uproot the Torah teachings. We mourn the tragedies it has produced:, desecration of the Sabbath, loss of modesty, and a litany of violations against many laws of our faith and Jewish teachings, amongst them the command of compassion for our fellow beings. The list goes on.

We further mourn the deportation, subjugation, and oppression of the Palestinian people. The list goes on and on…..

On the tragic day of this anniversary we fast and gather in Synagogues around the world, praying for a speedy, peaceful, and painless dismantlement of the heretical Zionist state of Israel. May we merit that this year will be the year all nations together, in the service of one G-d, can celebrate in a free Palestine and a free Jerusalem.

78. Northern Ireland
has long suffered with BIGOTRY not racism. Ian Paisley and his ilk have a solid following from the bible thumping loyalists and unionists. Putting God above all else but at the same time calling the pope a papist bastard and being cheered for it. On top of that you have the children being spat upon when trying to enter a school(catholic) because it was within 150 yards of a protestant (loyalist/unionist) neighborhood. Profound Christianity being shown I presume.
What is worse is that people here that have a pulpit and claim Irish heritage like Hannity, O'Reilly and Eileen Byrne in Chicago all praise everything repub like visits to Bob Jones and fail to see that they are the very types that have used bigotry against their own. I guess they are white Uncle Toms.

64. Sorry - but its important if only for HISTORICAL reasons, to
make sure people understand the true definition of the word.

Otherwise the meaning of antisemitism and the 2,000 years of persecution endured by the Jewish people, will be rendered meaningless. 2,000 years of Jewish history will be lost.

Of course, that is precisely what REAL antisemites want to do.

89. Semitic nations...
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 01:28 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - originated among Semitic peoples

Jews and Arabs are all Semites
Israelis
Arabs,
Eygptians
Syrians,
Iraqis,
Palistinians,
Jordanians

Semitic is an adjective referring to the peoples who have traditionally spoken Semitic languages or to things pertaining to them. Genetic analysis suggests that the Semitic peoples share a significant common ancestry, despite important differences and contributions from other groups. There is much debate about what the word Semitic means, but there is some consensus that it is a linguistic term that refers to Jews, Arabs and Amharic people. The negative form anti-Semitic, however, is almost always used to mean "anti-Jewish" specifically. The word derives from Shem, one of the three sons of Noah. The Proto-Semitic peoples, ancestors of the Semites in the Middle East, are thought to have been originally from the Arabian Peninsula. The Semitic languages are the northeastern subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic languages, and the only family of this group spoken in Asia. ... There are three factors which may assist to varying degrees in determining whether someone is considered Arab or not: Political: whether they live in a country which is a member of the Arab League (or, more vaguely, the Arab world); this definition covers more than 300 million people. ... Amharic (አማርኛ) is a Semitic language spoken in Northern Central Ethiopia, where it is the official language. ... Anti-Semitism (alternatively spelled antisemitism) is hostility towards Jews (not: Semites ). ... Shem (שֵׁם Name; renown; prosperity, Standard Hebrew Šem, Tiberian Hebrew Šēm; Greek Σημ, Sēm) was one of the sons of Noah in the Bible. ... The sons of Noah are named in Genesis 10 as Shem, Ham, and Japheth. ... Proto-Semitic is the hypothetical proto-language of the Semitic languages.

Outside linguistics, the term's primary use in modern times is to refer to the ethnic groups who have historically spoken Semitic languages. The best way known to test an ethnic group's common physical descent is through genetic research. Though in genetic research no significant common mitochondrial results have been yielded, genetic Y-chromosome links between Near-Eastern peoples like the Palestinians, Syrians and ethnic Jews have proved fruitful (see Y-chromosomal Aaron). While population genetics is still a young science, it seems to indicate that a significant proportion of these peoples' ancestry comes from a common Near-Eastern population to which (despite the differences with the Biblical genealogy) the term Semitic has been applied

Did you actually watch Galloway's testimony? Your critique suggests you did not. He was right on the money. It was fucking awesome.

The Israeli occupation of Palestine is an abomination. I'm sure you've heard the expression: "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". It should come as no surprise that people would resist in any way possible when their land is occupied, their homes and their crops are destroyed and their children are shot on their way to school.

9. Oh, there's that fallacy again!
Recognizing that Israel has treated Arabs badly isn't anti Semitic.

Israel is a country with a government and policy. Jews are a people, and most Jews live outside Israel.

Have you got the difference yet? No? Well, keep trying. We have all the faith in the world that someday you might make the connection.

55. Criticizing Israeli policies, as you say, isn't antisemitic. BUT
as Israel is the Jewish state, the Jewish homeland, and most of her citizens are Jewish, when Galloway hangs with guys who make speeches about DESTROYING Israel - that leads people to think he's antisemitic (ie, hostile to Jewish people).

Also, racial tensions were most certainly exacerbated in his campaign against Oona King.

If nothing else, he's a carpetbagger:)

And, his POV on women's rights and gay rights - well........

53. Sharon is no terrorist. He's been caught in a series of
tragic wars. He's now engineering the withdrawal from the occupied territories.

If you care about peace, and about the future of Palestinians and Israelis alike, you pray for the continued good health of Ariel Sharon.

He's made dreadful mistakes - but he was fighting a terrible foe in the shape of Yasser Arafat - who turned down statehood for his people. Since Arafat passed on, things have been much better and Sharon has become committed to the future of BOTH peoples.

70. The situation is FAR more complex than that - and it has
hardly been one-sided. There have been FIVE WARS and endless acts of terrorism against the Israeli people.

Sharon has often reacted WAY to heavily but the Israeli people were under serious attack as well.

Hopefully, things can work out now but I wouldn't count on it. Hamas and the other militias are squabbling internally, and also squabbling with Fatah and the P.A.

35. ok....here are links (no more responses from me)
Here is an excellent essay about the growing influence of far right and Islamic anti-semitic/anti-Jewish prejuidices on the British left (this goes far beyond suppporting a Palestinian state and peace in the ME---and many "pro-palestinian" and arab newspapers and newsletters are about as anti-Jewish as Julius Streicher and his "Der Sturmer" Newsletter)

BTW---When George Galloway first met Saddam Hussein, he said "I am with you, until we achieve victory, until Jerusalem." Considering Saddam publicly wished to eradicate Israel and it's inhabitants, that is rather telling I think.
also, to quote Mr Galloway

To Saddam Hussein in 1994:
Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability and I want you to know that we are with you

Galloway fans will be happy to know Saddam gave a personal shout out to mr galloway and Ramsey clark for "all of their help".

general essay on Anti-semitism in British Left, with only passing mention of Galloway

British jews on Galloway (from the Jewish paper, the Jerusalem Post. I hope nobody thinks Jews are not entitled to opinions about George Galloway!) :

Galloway win causes alarm, Yaakov Lappin, JPost, 8 May 2005

"This defeat is for Iraq. All the people you have killed, all the lies you have told have come back to haunt you," declared maverick lawmaker George Galloway following his tight election victory Friday in London's East End district of Bethnal Green. Galloway, who once praised Saddam Hussein and was kicked out of Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labor Party for his stance against the Iraq war, got even by beating Jewish MP Oona King in a traditional Labor stronghold. Running for the Respect party, which he founded in opposition to the war, Galloway's win gives him a platform to keep needling Blair, who won a historic third term for his party despite a reduced majority in parliament. Parading through his newly won constituency in an open-deck bus on Saturday, Galloway told followers: "It is one of my first missions to bring him in front of a court in The Hague and behind bars."

But Galloway's electoral success has been met with alarm and disdain across Britain. A source from the Conservative Party told The Jerusalem Post that "it is extremely worrying how lack of trust in Mr. Blair has been exploited by this demagogue." The election campaign for Bethnal Green, in which 50 percent of voters are Muslim, was one of the ugliest electoral fights in British political history. Oona King, the previous Labor MP for the area, accused the Respect party of inciting activists to hurl anti-Semitic abuse at her. A Labor source told the Post that the Respect party was "drumming up a poisonous atmosphere" as the election campaign reached its peak last month. King, who has a Jewish mother and a black father, told the British press that Respect party members instructed voters "not to vote for me because I am Jewish." Backing the Iraq war, King lost to Galloway by some 800 votes.

In a BBC interview which ended with Galloway removing his microphone and walking away, Jeremy Paxman, presenter of the News Night program, asked the newly elected MP whether he was "proud of having got rid of one of the very few black women in Parliament?" "If you ask that question again, I'm going, I warn you now," responded Galloway. "Don't try and threaten me, Mr. Galloway, please," answered Paxman. In the course of the interview, Galloway reiterated the message which has characterized his campaign: "There's absolutely no doubt that all those New Labor MPs who voted for Mr. Blair and Mr. Bush's war have on their hands the blood of 100,000 people in Iraq, many of them British soldiers, many of them American soldiers, most of them Iraqis. And that's a more important issue than the color of her skin."

"I think he's a carpet bagger," said David Lammy, Labor's Constitutional Affairs Minister, on the same program. Lammy, who is black, said that Galloway "came down from Scotland to whip up racial tensions. He has inherited now the most divided and polarized constituency. The manner in which he won that seat, whipping up racial tension, dividing some of the poorest people in this country, I think was obscene, and I'm deeply sad," added Lammy.

"Listening to Galloway's News Night speech was almost like hearing Saddam Hussein speak," said Gil Gorev, former head of the Israel Society at the London School of Economics. "It's a victory for British democracy that Galloway could run, but it's very sad that someone like that, with his history, gets elected," said Gorev. "He doesn't represent tolerance, or mutual respect. He's very aggressive. It's really sad," he added.

Galloway, who is regarded as anti-Semitic by some in Britain's Jewish community, is not a figure Israel should be particularly concerned about, according to Gorev. "Most of Galloway's agenda is about British domestic issues, and attacking Blair for the Iraq war."

Oliver Kamm on Galloway's RESPECT Party (side note---Mr. Kamm is an unknown entity to me as well, but his essay on RESPECT seemed rather good--i assume he is a british progressive (he says he is a liberal in his essay) and apparently the Nation online has a link to his blog or his articles as well, so I assume he is not some crazy brit Freeper)
http://oliverkamm.typepad.com/blog/2005/05/respect_and_fas.html
Quote:
I have written much about the position of the Respect 'Coalition' on comparable matters, and will not rehearse the argument in this post. It is enough to say that Respect is a front organisation for the Socialist Workers' Party, whose adoption of traditional antisemitism in my judgement parallels the history of the British Union of Fascists. Antisemitism is not central to the SWP's founding (or rather that of its predecessor organisation, the International Socialists), and the SWP's adoption of it is partly cynical; but having adopted antisemitism, the SWP is campaigning hard on it, and has made the issue fundamental to the party's current political identity. The SWP is not alone on the far Left in its resort to standard anti-Jewish themes, and I have written of other instances. But it is the most influential antisemitic organisation active in Britain today. It is properly regarded as the ideological heir of a particular strain of pre-war fascism, and the Respect 'Coalition' is aptly compared to the Mosleyite tradition
End Quote

Here is an analysis of Galloway's financial dealings with Iraq that seems unbiased and rather well reasearched:
(I do not know who Mr. Willmore is but, 'Marxmail' probably means he is a socialist or of the British political left)

>From Ian Willmore via Marxmail:

It is now possible to state with some certainty what lies behind the George
Galloway
story.

For those on your list who have not followed it, Scottish left MP Galloway,
a prominent
critic of the invasion of Iraq, has been turned over by the Daily Telegraph
newspaper,
which allegedly found documents in Baghdad stating that he had received
funds from
Saddam's regime.

The facts seem to show that this is neither the "CIA stitch-up" suggested by
naive
leftists nor the "treachery" alleged by the absurd Charles Moore, editor of
the Daily
Telegraph. Much of the truth was in fact admitted by Galloway himself to
yesterday's BBC
Newnight Programme.

None of the following facts are disputed:

1. Galloway set up an organisation called the Mariam Appeal (MA), named
after an eight
year old Iraqi child suffering from leukemia. This was not in fact a charity
but a
political campaign group.
2. Galloway has not published accounts for MA but it is known that it
paid for, inter
alia, a number of his political trips to the Middle East, some of which
concerned protests
against sanctions on Iraq. Galloway likes a good hotel - he was previously
involved in
controversy over expenses when running the UK aid campaign group War on
Want.
3. In the past, the House of Commons Ethics Committee (yes it does
exist!) has
criticised the opacity of the MA.
4. It is known that MA gets much of its money from three sources, the
Saudi Government,
the UAE Government, and Mr Fawaz Zureikat. Zureikat is registered to trade
in the UN oil
for food programme in Iraq. Galloway supplied Zureikat with a letter
authorising him to
act as Galloway's business agent in Iraq.
5. Zureikat is now Chair of the MA, and has donated large sums to it in
the past -
Galloway has estimated at least £200,000 over four years.

My analysis is as follows:

1. Mr Zureikat has close ties to the Iraqi regime. He has certainly been
involved in
setting up trips by Galloway to Baghdad in the past, and other Iraq-related
campaign
activities undertaken by the MP.
2. Mr Zureikat almost certainly has ties to Iraqi intelligence. A copy of
Galloway's
letter of comfort (see point 4 above) was found in the Baghdad file. I guess
he offered
Galloway to the Iraqi regime as an "agent of influence", to borrow an old
KGB term.
Galloway almost certainly knew nothing of this - I find his amazement at the
Telegraph's
revelations quite credible. However, Galloway did know that Zureikat was
dealing with the
regime and that some of the resulting money was coming back to MA
3. Iraqi intelligence knowingly funded Zureikat, probably to the tune of
£375,000 a
year or thereabouts, as suggested by the Telegraph, using oil for food
revenues. They did
this believing they were funding Galloway's political activity.
4. The discrepancy between the sums in the Telegraph report and the sums
admitted as MA
income by Galloway may be explained by (a) vagueness about figures on both
sides, and (b)
a large amount of cash sticking to the person of Mr Zureikat.
5. Galloway derived no personal benefit from the Iraqi cash, unless you
count stays in
Baghdad hotels and the chance to spend Xmas with Tariq Aziz (which must have
been a bunch
of fun).
6. But if you take money from dodgy regimes, and from businessmen who
deal with them,
you cannot expect to escape censure when these things are discovered.
Galloway was at
least one step too close to the Iraqi regime, and indeed to the equally
nasty Saudi regime
and the more benign but hardly progressive rulers of the UAE.
7. Galloway has hubris written on his forehead in letters a foot high.
But his nemesis
may discredit not only him but the UK peace movement as well. Grrrr.

here is an ADL article which mentions Galloway being involved with extremist anti-semites in Egypt

when he told Saddam Hussein "I will be with you until victory...until we march into jerusalem"

saying that to a man that has publicly threatened to attack Israel and has published Arabic books and writings worthy of Der Sturmer is rather anti-semitic.
So is calling the leader of Hamas, a group that considers Jews to be inhuman monsters and is dedicated to killing Jews in the ME whenever, wherever they get the chance, a martyr. It is like calling Adolf Eichmann a martyr.

or accusing the Senate to be working for their Zionist masters...etc. Al Gore being a Zionist puppet...the list goes on and on

45. what do his anti-semitic views have to do with trent lott's racism?
if he's anti-semitic or has made anti-semitic coded statements, then i condemn that and him for it.

but i'm still thrilled that he told the truth, forcefully, to coleman and am happy to have a forceful ally in the battle against shrub and the iraq morass.

trent lott is anti-black and has made anti-black coded statements, and i condemn him that and him for it.

and i'm still deplore his positions on coporate liability, social security, taxes, and just about everything else.

what's the problem? are you trying to make like our allies on one particular issue (iraq war) must be pure of soul and perfect in every way?

are you trying to say that if we ever condemn a political opponent for something, then we can never, ever, in any context, side with anyone for any reason if they're subject to the same slam?

politics is a bit more complicated than that, somebody once said something about strange bedfellows.

somebody also once said only the dark side deals in absolutes.
