DU should - "Adopt a Classroom"
I think it would be a great idea to see some of the liberal/democratic/progressive blogs & sites make an effort to adopt some classrooms.

Generally the students are very happy and the local towns do articles, so short of doing a few bucks for prweb.com releases or something else perhaps energizing communities, schools and KIDS will help :)

All talk no action? :)

Update.. ahh. got a response. I'm 100% up for this.. if people want to private message me or get something together don't hesitate to ask.

I would even invite your local DNC/DFA and PDA groups to get involved. It would be great to see a bunch of Young Democrat groups and such sponsor a room.

(the site is legit, i found out about it in reading the lancaster paper and they have several stories about the success of the program)

4. I don't like the idea, and I'll tell you why.

If anyone here has read, "Don't Think of an Elephant", you'll see that by us subsidizing schools, the republicans succeed even further towards "privatizing the left".

Schools should be supported by gov't, and if progressives money to programs such as "adopt a classroom", it deprives candidates we'd like to see elected of much needed cash.

If we don't want representatives to be beholding to corporations, I'd much rather give a Democrat $$$ to get elected and have the gov't support education.

Corporations give money to candidates in order to get favorable tax breaks and legislation, shouldn't we give money to our candidates in order to strengthen the faint, support the weak, heal the afflicted and educate our children?

5. You miss the point..
These schools need help.

Are you basically saying let the republicans do it because we won't do it until we are in control?

That is exactly what i despise about waiting to do something that we can solve today. Schools will be perpetually under funded. Now is the time to take action.

We have to find what unites us, and helping schools is a damn good reason to unite us.

7. Controlling the congress will do more in the long run to help schools
more than donating money to a classroom. I'm not trying to be a "Scrooge", I'm looking at the long-term fix for schools.

Republicans will love the idea of liberals spending personal funds funds to support schools. They'd rather that than you donating money to a 527 group to shoot them down, or a candidate that would defeat a republican.

We need representatives that would support a 21st Century "Great Society" or "New Deal" movement.

9. and what happens when
free republic and other conservative outfits start "adopting" classrooms, too? people are going to scream bloody murder. i think partisan political groups should stay OUT of the public schools. it is going to come back and bite you in the ass.

if you are talking financial support only, i'm all for it. i thought you meant going into the classes in some way with political viewpoints.

11. You should click on the link.
This has nothing to do with political philosophy in the classroom.

12. If we do this we should pick one in a conservative state
Edited on Mon Jun-06-05 04:13 PM by LeftyMom
or a swing state that swung thier way (like Ohio,) so we generate press someplace it would be most useful.

ALso, we have plenty of teachers on DU, maybe one of them could nominate a new teacher who needs help getting supplies or a teacher with particularly needy students we could help.
