Candidates: Power-lust vs. servant
When looking at candidates, one of the questions I always ask myself is: Is this person running out of power-lust, or the desire to to good?

While I think he would be a strong candidate who could win, I also think it's clear that Clark is all about power-lust. Other generals in the military regarded him that way, and now it's come to light that he wanted to serve in the Bush Admin post-9/11 and wanted to be a Republican. It's only because they ignored him that he wants to "get back" at them by running as the Democratic candidate.

Contrast this to the character of a Wellstone.

1. Welcome to DU!
It's hard to find anyone running for office who isn't interested in power. Wellstone was a rare person with character (how many Senate votes were 99 to 1?). You might be right about Clark, but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and hear what he has to say. I am not ready to jump on his bandwagon yet though.

3. same here...willing to listen and vote if need be but
a man who says he was apolitical but voted exclusively for repub prezes until just three years ago and now wants to be our candidate sets of so many "does not compute" alarms in my head, it's not funny.

2. I dont care if clark has nightly orgasms about his lusting for power
i care about if he will bring a sufficiently progressive voice in contrast with being electable. I also care if he could get things done while in there.

4. Sufficiently progressive?
Edited on Sun Sep-21-03 04:19 PM by David_REE
The guy voted for Nixon and Reagan, and did everything possible to join the Bush Admin post-9/11 and call himself a Republican?

Could you name *any* other Democrat who might have done those things and was also "sufficiently progressive"?

8. I dont Care if Clark is a republican, green, democrat, socialist, etc.
I evaluate his positions and see if he can win. From what ive read on some of what he advocates (ie Pentagon cuts for healthcare, engaging Cuba, multi-lateralism, etc.) he is "left-wing" ideologically.

5. while the power/service is a sliding scale thing
all pols are heavy toward the power side. All of them. It sure as heck isn't the money and they find out quickly enough that the service is highly limited.
