Eugene soldier loses foot, part of leg after wounds in attack


Military surgeons in Germany have amputated the left foot and part of the right leg of an Oregon National Guard sergeant from Eugene who felt a religious calling to serve his country.

Sgt. Johan Christian Bagge, 23, was among 10 Oregon National Guard soldiers hurt by two successive roadside bombs Friday in Iraq. Surgeons were able to save his wounded arm.

"My cousin believes that this is exactly what the Lord wanted him to do," she said. "He told my parents that the very best place for him was smack dab in the middle of God's plan. That meant, go into the service and go to Iraq."

Ashley Bomke, 23, said she panicked when she heard the news that her husband, whom she married just seven months ago, had been injured.
But after speaking to him on the phone, she felt reassured. ``I think he's going to be OK,'' she said.
