Poll question: More Important to debunk myths or get elected?
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 09:22 AM by new_beawr
A couple of threads expressing outrage and regret over the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings have got me thinking. The Corporatists, Fascists, Republicans, you know the cast of characters.. are brilliant at using the American Myth (opportunity, just wars, etc) to gain votes. Do we need to shatter these myths before a more egalitarian and just federal government can be elected? Is there a way we can look to these myths and show how the progressive spirit in this country has actually made these myths closer to truth than the other side's coopting of the American Myth?

1. I don't know. There's a considerable conservative backlash still
going on, against people in academics who teach students to question the American myth. Some people are just not willing to hear the truth.

4. The Truth is
that a Myth is a basket in which some truth is carried. Learned that in college. "Going to Hell in a hand basket" comes to mind.

2. What is important is that these BushCo rethuglicans are thrown...
....into prison for war crimes and treason against the American people.

3. Use the analogy of what we demanded of Germany & Japan
part of what made WW II the"good" war was that we not only defeated fascists, but made them face up to their sins and "de-nazified" them.

Combine this positive cultural memory with the biblical idea that before you remove a speck from your neighbor's eye, you should take the log out of your own first.

It shows our strength of character that we are willing to address our flaws.

The two most obvious ones, our treatment of Indians and blacks, most people seem to be generally aware of, and if it wasn't for the media drumbeat of the far right, we might have come closer to dealing with those honorably.
