Who else thinks Al Franken was set up by DOD?

In case you missed it Al had a caller who he put on at the request of the Dept of Defense. The guy came across as just the sweetest , most clueless man you can imagine. He didn't know shit about shit. So Franken starts questioning him and the guy goes into thank your viewers for their support mode. Made Franken look mean and against the troops. That had to have been a set-up. Its classic. Franken was really upset at the way the call went and explained that he was "hornswaggled" by the military.

the military had a credibility problem, and the guy in this soft spoken voice said no he didn't think so and he sure did appreciate the support of the people. It was god-awful

...I'd have to say that if Franken asked that question he was just asking to get smacked down (if he, in fact, did). Did he say "military" or "military leadership"? Because if he asked "does the military have a credibility problem?" it's not hard to see how that could be turned against him. I'm sure I know what he meant but it sounds as though he worded it poorly.

The guy played the part well, it seemed he had no clue what was going on. He was in "strategic command" and probably never left the green zone. He spent most of the time trying to push through talking points. So I turned it. those exchanges never end well.

As I listened, I thought Franken handled the interview quite well. He was very gentle with the guy and expressed how Americans all support the troops no matter how we feel aobut the war.

I just have a different impression. It certainly was a delicate interview

Actually, I do agree that the DOD was trying to set him up and was just coming back to add dome more to post.

I was listening to the interview he's doing right now and the guest was pointing out that the DOD probably asked for this interview since their image is quite tarnished. And then he went on to talk about Jessica Lynch and Tillman as examples of why.

Doesn't this all smack of how there's this concerted effort against AAR recently. So, I have the feeling that Franken sensed it and took a very careful approach. Walking on eggs since it was a trap. And I smell the work of Rove here, too.

I'm going to catch the show on Sundance tonight to get a sense of how it feels being able to watch it. I hope they include this segment!

A couple weeks ago I was at work and a customer said something about, I think it was, a TV show and mentioned a connection to that poor girl that the Iraqis tortured that the troops rescued, how the Iraqis broke her legs and tortured her and...

I told her that it never happened, and that Lynch herself denied it, that she was well treated at the hospital.

"But they could have tortured her" the customer went on.

I gave up.

I don't think this was a "setup", I think it was a desperate attempt by the DoD at "Spin-Control" and it didn't work. Franken was very nice - but it's really weird when you even entertain the notion that a 50-ish comedian is some kind of bully compared to a U.S. Colonel on active duty.

IMHO thats why they requested he be put on, he was probably drugged up (hence peaceful sounding) to stop the pain from being a triple amputee thanks to a roadside bomb.
