Tulsa Zoo caves in to fundy morons
They agreed today to put up a "creation" disclaimer alongside their
signs that explain evolution. Probably on the KOTV link but I haven't checked, just now saw it on the local broadcast.

I'm so pissed I have to stop typing now.

15. Seems to open the floodgates
"the hundreds of creation stories that are in the world including many dozens that are in the U.S. from the Native American people to include in that exhibit," says Reverend Marlin

So, the final form of the creation display is a long way from the final debate.

6. That's so sad; that zoo is/was gorgeous!
Don't the Friends of the Zoo, or a similar org., have any recourse, or do the fundies run them, too?

10. There seems to be a lot of politics in the "Friends of the Zoo" lately...
I live 40 miles away now and haven't been there in years, but used to go often and play golf on the adjacent course. I'm no big fan of zoos in general, (I don't like the idea of locking up animals, human or otherwise) but that one is far less objectionable than many...or maybe most concerning the treatment & environment. But the mayor is a bigtime fundy-type supporter and of course a Repug well connected to the oil business and the GOP machine...my folks were acquainted and in business with them 40 years ago. A real nest of snakes, but my mom who still lives there has, at age 89, come to realize how misguided she was for decades (working for the Repugs) and now admits Bush and the GOP has turned into neo-Nazis. She calls Chimp an "ignorant little prick."

believer in both God and Science. Why can't they manage it?

and is a regularly published LTTE writer to the Tulsa World - a cranky, christofascist rightwingnut of the first order. What a fuckin' embarrassment this is! Thanks, Mayor LaFortune - like Tulsa needed to be more of a laughingstock. Maybe we can get some of that publicity that Kansas got recently with Scopes II!
Tulsa Metropolitan Ministries is an multifaith organization of Tulsa religious leaders & works thanklessly around here trying to temper idiocy & foster tolerance - a nearly impossible job, for sure. Rev. Martin Lavanhar is from All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa :applause: and he has a great idea - hell, yeah - get all the Native American tribes to put exhibits of THEIR creation stories alongside the xtian display (and any others). Somehow I don't think the fundies will like that very much though.
I think the purpose of the Hick & his pushing of the Creationism display is so that the fundie children who come to the zoo won't be tempted to expand their stunted views (or God forbid think for themselves). Talk about dumbing-down of our youth - sheesh! My kid is laughing his ass off about this.
Hi, karlrschneider & thanks for posting this - I would've responded when I first saw this but I had to bang my head against the wall for a while!

19. I grew up less than half a mile from All Souls but was required to go to
Trinity Methodist, a bit to the south. When I got past puberty, I experimented with a few others including the Christian Science one downtown...an interesting experience...then I eventually got into Tulsa Univ where some credit hours in religion were required (6 or 9, I forget which) and that's when I became an atheist. Funny how that works, eh?

course, it's been gone for many years but in the late 50s, my crowd wore down their parking lot and most all of Peoria from 31st to 51st. I miss those days. ;-)

24. I hope some other religions will put on exhibit some differing
theories of creation. Anything to minimize this attitude that "We won, we have a mandate."
