On the evening of June 11th, acclaimed performers (listed above) and leading activists will join us for a staged reading that presents inspiring stories of fifty-one women and men from around the world who have stood up to oppression at great personal risk in the non-violent pursuit of human rights. The individuals portrayed include Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic and Baltasar Garzon of Spain, as well as Nobel Prize laureates The Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, Oscar Arias, Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Jose Ramos-Horta, Bobby Muller, and Wangari Maathai.

In conjunction with Amnesty International, three of the actual defenders portrayed in Speak Truth to Power (Marina Pisklakova, Russia’s leading women’s rights advocate, Ka Hsaw Wa from Burma, founder of EarthRights International and a leader in the call for multinational corporate responsibility, and Van Jones from the United States, founder of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which challenges abuses in the US criminal justice system) will discuss an education curriculum on Human Rights with students from local schools. An educational packet and a disposable camera for each student will be provided.
