Why haven't we heard how many Americans died during the Tsunami?

2. I think it was a few hunded.
Pretty small number, considering the amount of death in that region that day. You heard more about the Swedes, Canadians, Brits, and Australians because their news media had a better ability to penetrate into the area during the first days. While the U.S. media did have a thing for the stories of white people, they mostly had to rely upon other nations' press agencies to get feeds.

I thought there were a lot from preliminary reports. Our government would not know how to deal with it if there were more than the 9-11 death count. We would have to start going after tsunamis for WMDs

4. There were thousands initially reported as missing
Most of them weren't really missing. Over a week or so, the state department verified their survival in most cases.

By March, the numbers were down to 34 dead, 135 missing.
