We should have let them go for the "nuclear option." |
|
With the Repubs conrolling the Senate, they're going to approve every Bush right -wing judge. So what did we have to lose? It would have shown them as the power jungry pigs they are, and when we took back the Senate, it would have bitten them in the ass.

1. Personally, I want think the Senate will need the filibuster for SC |
|
nominations that are sure to come.
Because the general public has better appreciation of the Supreme Court than the District Courts it will be harder (though not impossible) for Frist to pull the trigger when Dems make a stand on packing the US Supreme Court with right wing activist judges.

5. They will end the filibuster at the first whiff of dissent |
|
over the first asshole judge they want to rubberstamp, SC or not. This was the stupidest agreement the Dems have ever done. The only good that can possibly come out of it is if every single Democrat walks out when they do end the filibuster and are able to say that they bent over backwards in accepting the unacceptable to preserve it and that the last vestige of bipartisanship is gone, that it's a dictatorship, and that they can no longer do the people's work.
But how likely is that to happen? Most of those wimps are just place holders, raising money for the next election while watching their fat pensions accrue and enjoying the best socialized medicine in the world. They'll sit and sell us out and we WILL have a dictatorship.
I am disgusted by the agreement, by them, by the whole destruction of the checks and balances that served us so well for so long. To hell with the lot of them if they roll over and play dead for the neocons and theocrats.

2. And with a little luck and maybe some Democratic backbones, |
|
the SC approval won't come until after the elections next year and hopefully the Democrats will actually have a workable plan by then and get some seats back.

3. The whole "compromise" is a farce. |
|
It was a clear victory for the rightwing and it's "moderate" allies. The "nuclear option" is still available to use at the slightest whimper of the Democrats in opposition to any candidate that Bush wants to propose.
It has rendered the filubuster useless and unused in the face of 3 fascist judges.
Chamberlain would've been proud of it.

...I have never quite understood how that whole compromise was a "victory" for us. First of all, we backed down on several of Bush's nominees who are less than stellar examples of judicial prowess. Second, we stated that we would not filibuster others unless circumstances are "extreme" (whatever that means). And third, we didn't secure guarantees of the same behavior from the Republicans. All in all, I am not impressed with this arrangement.
