$9B Goes Missing In Iraq
Huge Sum Disappears Without A Trace
Helen Thomas, Hearst White House columnist

POSTED: 12:41 pm EST February 24, 2005

Profiteering from the Iraq war is not a surprise, especially in light of the Bush administration's pandering to the military-industrial complex.

But some Democratic lawmakers are concerned that profiteering may have achieved stratospheric dimensions in the case of the $9 billion that is missing from the sale of Iraqi oil. This money was to have been used for humanitarian aid and reconstruction for Iraq.

It seems no one is watching the store. The fund was transferred to Iraqi government ministries, which lacked the proper financial controls, security and staff to keep close tabs on the money flow.

Remember how much attention this got?

This goes to the heart of corruption and accountability.

Bushco is ok with US taxpayers footign the bill for corruption as we get our soc sec chopped, highest drug costs in the world and our freedoms yanked.

And the mafia/CIA-Corporate controlled press does "NADA".

This bullshit has to stop.

2. don't forget - David Hackworth "broke this story" - NOT THE MEDIA
Audit shows $8.8 billion in Iraq funds missing
Coalition official cites body for lax ‘stewardship’
Updated: 6:06 p.m. ET Aug. 19, 2004WASHINGTON - At least $8.8 billion in Iraqi funds that was given to Iraqi ministries by the former U.S.-led authority there cannot be accounted for, according to a draft U.S. audit set for release soon.

The audit by the Coalition Provisional Authority’s own inspector general blasts the CPA for “not providing adequate stewardship” of at least $8.8 billion from the Development Fund for Iraq that was given to Iraqi ministries.

The audit was first reported on a Web site earlier this month by David Hackworth, a journalist and retired colonel. A U.S. official confirmed that the contents of the leaked audit cited by Hackworth were accurate.

We owe to Hackworth to keep this alive for him!

3. Nobody Feels It
This regime is good at fleecing people and they don't know they've gotten reamed good. Oil and energy prices can double and people bitch and piss and moan, but they pony up and they're off for the 4 day weekend.

This invasion is remote to most people. All they know of it is the limited view they see. They don't directly feel it like they did in WWII when certain items were rationed...or Vietnam when the draft and a creeping inflation made people aware this war was getting expensive. None of that is being felt right now. Those getting the worst of it...are the poor who pay the most in blood and treasure and have the weakest voice in this country.

Keep people numbed and diverted. Give us Jacko and Who Was Deep Throat and Desperate Housewives. 9 billion? That's not my money, that's someone elses. They're living in a short-sighted world that enables this regime to push the envelope further. How much longer can it go on? Right now, sadly, there's no end in sight.

11. Not If It's Done In Steps...
Sadly, so few people understand how the SSI system works, yet alone keeps track of their contributions over the years. Most won't know they got screwed for 10 or 20 years from now. In the meantime, many are fed lies that this money (that abstract amount these people know they've nutted away, just have no clue how much) will make them a lot richer if it's given to a Wall Street brokerage firm. Go figger.

Look how this regime has gutted the tax structure for the rich. They went for bites here and there...slowly spreading the wealth around...raising exemptions each year that no one but an accountant will notice. The same will be done with SSI. The system won't go away overnight, just the amount contributed will be lesser and lesser. Plus, unless you're an employer, you won't see how much deeper those cuts will be for the corporates who hate paying SSI.

We're conditioned now to internalize our own financial situation and troubles as "private and personal". Because of this mindset, many who are hurting financially won't really say how bad or take responsibility for their complicity in this era of greed and corruption.

4. How about the 3.4 TRILLION missing from the Pentagon?
(See Cynthia McKinney on C-Span asking Rumsfeld about this on several occasions)

She asked about the War Games on 9/11 as well....

No answers to either -as usual. No media reporting or coverage -as usual.

16. It could be going into more personal, neoCON investments.
 Wherever it's going, obviously, that place is vewy, vewy bad. What's stunning is just how easy it seems for these puckers to embezzle that much dough!!!! When they are finally ousted, we may actually get some idea where all that money was funneled,...at least, I sure as hell hope we do! That information may destroy the right-wing corrupt wing of the corporate machine. I hope I hope I hope.

7. There's no honor among thieves
including those Iraqis that are in bed with the US and are also profiteering from all this. You spread as much money around as there has been and they come out of the woodwork.

Investigate $9 Billion Missing in Iraq
Dennis Kucinich speaking from the Floor of the House

Link to this entry in the Congressional Record
February 1, 2005

"Mr. Speaker, I have called for a Federal grand jury investigation of the administration's Coalition Provisional Authority which, according to the U.S. Inspector General, lost track of $9 billion in Iraq that it controlled over a period of 9 months, ending last October; $9 billion, gone.

"Was the $9 billion stolen? Did it go to pay bribes? Do we have another Iran-Contra on our hands? We will not know until top U.S. officials under penalty of perjury are called before the grand jury to answer questions about the missing $9 billion. The administration's response has been, Hey, it's Iraq, it's chaos, it's war. I say, Hey, you can't account for $9 billion spent over 9 months. That is $30 million a day. And you want Congress to appropriate another $80 billion for Iraq? I do not think so. Investigate Iraq-gate and the unaccounted- for $9 billion."
