Accused robber in jail; his dogs remain at pound (Tasered the dog!)
http://www.bangornews.com/news/templates/?a=114690

BANGOR - A transient man accused of robbing the Brewer Wal-Mart last week remained Tuesday at the Penobscot County Jail while his dog, which police had to subdue in the store's parking lot using a Taser, remained at the Bangor Humane Society, also awaiting release.

Brewer police arrested Kelly Joe Porter, 48, a transient from Texas, after store employees said he attacked them when they confronted him about taking about $40 in items from the store without paying for them.

It took three or four of them to subdue the man, who earlier that same day had told police that he was well connected and on a "mission" from God, according to court documents.
<snip>

One of the more odd Taser stories I've run into.

2. From what I understand, the dog had tried to bite an officer...
So, while I'm usually the last one on Earth to defend overzealous cops, I gotta admit that without the Taser, they probably would have just shot the dog. In this case, getting Tased probably saved the dog's life.

5. Or, god forbid, they could have called animal control.

6. Yeah, but they're cops.
If a dog snaps at them, they're gonna do something. Before Tasers, they would have shot it. Like I said, I'm the last one to defend overzealous cops. If I had any love in my heart for the man in blue, it got beaten out of me at FTAA in 2003.

You can't expecct the cops to call animal control when there's a dog snapping at them right in front of their faces. They're not going to back off the dog. They have a violent situation, and they remedy the violent situation. All I'm saying is, the dog's lucky to be alive.
