Special Rights?
I was posting to a thread when an old 'talking point' of mine (actually a posting point, but whose gonna split hairs about it?) came to mind.

It's about the Neocon argument that gays want "special rights" just because they want to have what everybody else has--a partner with all the same rights and responsibilities as any straight person's spouse.

More or less.

Well...let's juxtapose this onto their whole deal about their religious iconography in the public square. You know--the 10 Commandments in the courtroom, school prayer, etc.

I think THEY want a special right they are in no way entitled to. They want the right to put up their religious icons where everyone can see them, but would scream bloody murder if any 'minority' religion were to be given the ability to do the same.

Prayer in the classroom?

How about 'rituals' in the classroom? Not saying that most pagans/wiccans would WANT such a thing, but, if they did, do you think the Religious Right would accept it?

Hardly.

Now a zoo is getting flack for having a statue of a hindu God on display. What's the big deal?

I'll tell you. They don't want their "special rights" trampled.

It would be funny if it weren't so damn sick.

2. Reminds me
of something I heard on AAR the other day. Randi (I think) was talking about projection. Everything they accuse others of being, that's what they are.

3. Equal Rights are not Special Rights
I was in a discussion group with a bunch of fundies and some gays. I presented the following proposition: "Many people claim that gays are asking for "special rights". Please name some of the specific "special rights" that gays have requested".

There were lots of crickets chirping, but not one person stepped up to present a "special right" that gay people had allegedly demanded.

It was nice to see their stupid argument fall flat.
