numbers. But, just lately, I'd been harboring some unexpected hope that we might avoid the worst case scenario. Now...shark stories. Not. Good.

4. Why are we overlooking the obvious?
This isn't a very good distraction story at all.

Dig this: Anomalous shark attacks increase during years when the Atlantic Thermohaline Current changes the most. This is a direct effect of Global Warming.

The water temperature at the Jersey Shore has increased 10F in some areas over just the past two weeks. The salinity figures would be likewise interesting to look at. It appears that there has been a tug-of-war between fresh water from melted ice, and saltier tropical water.

This ought to be made the environmental story of the summer. Instead, we sit around making "nothing to see here, move along" cracks. Sharks in a chaotic and dying ocean will logically get hungrier as time goes along.

It's not a diversion, it's an omen.

statistics indicated that shark attacks were actually occurring LESS than usual - they were making a mountain out of a molehill, but a code was being sent to operatives...

10. I agree with you on this, however, you have to understand the history
Around here on DU

During the spring and summer of '01, CNN and other MSM outlets were broadcasting virtually 24/7 about shark attacks, even though statistically speaking, shark attacks were on the decline. We all were wondering why they were doing such an obvious diversionary tactic. Then 911 hit, and we new that was indeed, the public was having the wool pulled over their eyes.

It isn't that we don't take these things seriously, it is more of an inside joke amongst those of us who were around at the time.

21. I hope not
but I wouldn't be surprised if something happens. :\ Bolton isn't in the UN so they can't do that plan and they're still wanting to go to Iran. :\ I was reading another thread last night dealing with Bilderberg and a lot of them were against going to Iran because it would basically be too much trouble and we all know Bush wants to because of the oil pipeline and his PNAC plans. I only wonder if they would do it. Cheney did say last year that if you vote for the wrong person you'll get attacked again. I've learned with these people they speak backwards talk and to take everything they say and turn it around. So do you think he was really talking about them or what? On one hand I think people would turn against him because Bush ran on the "great protector" ordeal and how there hasn't been another attack since 9/11, so if another attack happens he could loose people. But then I think that if he does do another attack people would want to rally around them and they could get the patriot act reinserted and part two as well. Knowing these people they probably would do it because they only think of themselves. The republicans who are running in 2006 can run on "protecting freedoms" and all that and win seats. My question is: where would they attack? Somewhere in New York, California or where?

15. Actually, I do understand that history
I didn't agree with it because half a dozen shark attacks couldn't compare to 3000 people dying in a well-planned terrorist attack. It works as a joke, but I get the distinct impression that a lot of people accept it as truth.

The problem with it now is that it's such a piece of DU lore that many of us ARE overlooking the obvious. Nearly everyone brings up the fact that the statistics showed fewer shark attacks, but those that were happening were moving toward the shallows of the coastlines, places sharks usually avoid. Sure enough, in many areas where there have been major fish die-offs, sharks are dying of a kind of oceanic famine.

I like a good joke, but the shark attacks really are frightening, and from a different point of view than reminding people of Jaws. It's news in itself -- and not a diversion at all from the destructive environmental policies that Bush and Co. continue to support.

11. The shark story was big around here...
for a couple of hours.

Even the kid's mother agreed a sharkbite was so unusual it "was just one of those things."

Aside from questions about the conditions of the oceans and that we kill over a million sharks a year (so, who's really the victim?) it is interesting that the last two shark attacks in NJ were at the opening of "Jaws" and at its 25th anniversary.

23. Well Jaws just hit it's 30 year anniversary a week ago.
I work at Universal Studios Florida, we just opened our new "Fear Factor" (rolls eyes, it wasn't my idea, I swear!) attraction. Fear factor Live! was all over the news, and of course the park was promoting the hell out of it. Then while in the breakroom, I see a piece on ABC at Martha's Vinyard (Where Jaws was filmed, and they were having a big 30th anniversary party there.)

I thought that was funny as hell, I WORK at Universal Studios and I didn't know, the Jaws attraction is right next door to me and nobody said a peep. All the focus was on the opening of Fear Factor. I wondered if the people working at Jaws even knew it was the Thirty year anniversary of their movie.

A warped scene from Sixteen Candles flashed through my mind, Jaws is crying "They forgot my birthday!".
