Why aren't we protesting at the Michael Jackson circus?
MessiahRp made an astute observation, buried in another thread. We hold protests on serious issues. The media covers the scene at fluff events, like the Michael Jackson trial, or the Schiavo fiasco.

We aren't we moving our protests to those locations? Why aren't we standing in front of the media there, with signs asking why they aren't spending the same energy covering the Downing Street Minutes?

We know where the media giants are. We know they aren't going to move the mountain to us. We need to start moving to the mountain, getting in front of their cameras.

to both of you. Every so often, there is one tree in a forest that stands much higher, and is far more majestic than those surrounding it. Some posts on DU are much the same. Reading this has brought a smile to my face! Yes!

4. Off the top of my head, I'd say this will do no good.
The media are there to cover the Michael Jackson trial. They will cover the Michael Jackson trial. No one will ever even hear that you were there.

But, I could be mistaken.

15. The media is stuck out there reporting nothing
I have to believe some of them are desperate for SOMETHING to cover.

Some snippets from last night's Countdown:

OLBERMANN: ... So you guys are stuck covering this, and you don‘t have the energy and the inspiration provided by knowing that there‘s a nation on pins and needles awaiting that word. I know this feeling. I mean, I once covered a football strike for eight months. What are you all doing to pass the time?

<snip>

GUTHRIE: ... I‘m pondering whether a flowered skirt worn by one of the jurors means the verdict is imminent. Possibly. But apparently not because she was wearing that today, and we didn‘t get a verdict.

You know, we‘re speculating a lot, and I‘m doing a lot of this, talking and not having much to say and just sort of stretching out the time and using up network cable news minutes, you know, that kind of thing.

29. Is that a real response?
Surely she wasn't saying that. Is that satire?

No? Oh, help....

"I‘m pondering whether a flowered skirt worn by one of the jurors means the verdict is imminent"

*gasp* Maybe it was an obscure Georgia O'Keefe reference! :eyes:

7. Careful how it appears
There's a risk of being seen as supporting Michael Jackson. There's probably a way to express "since the media isn't giving this coverage we are resorting to this".

We know now where they go, what stories the tend to cover. We need to make the media whores work for us.

Remember the saying: "If The Mountain Won't Come to Mohammed, Then Mohammed Must Go To The Mountain.

I lived in the Santa Ynez valley for a year, and would love an opportunity to go back. Do you think we could ask the jury to hold out for another week? I'm busy next week. :)

25. Taking it a step further
Many of these circuses ties into our values in one way or another. We should be able to find an appropriate way to frame each one and tie it to current events that should be covered. During the Schiavo thing, the only democrat I saw that really went down to grab the media time was Jessie Jackson. While I didn't agree with his personal views on that case, he did get good press coverage, because he went where the media was. There's a lesson to be learned in that.

We missed a great chance there to protest the lack of health insurance in America. We should have had democratic leaders on the scene to raise the issue of people being denied lifesaving medicine, because they can't afford it, in addition to everyday people protesting on the scene helping the media to focus on the real underlying issues.

Many of us saw the connection - but we didn't go to where the media action was to make our case.

27. I just caught a segment on the trial, and they were
covering the MJ protestors. I think the media's trying to whip the viewership into a frenzy by suggesting the verdict has the potential of making these "fans" get violent. Huh?

Who are these protesting people, and who imported them? And I'm wondering if there may be a danger to the jury if they "so say all guilty" ?

Even if the jury finds MJ innocent, I hope the judge bans children under 18 from ever stepping foot in Neverland, or within 20 feet of him! Of course, I would arrest parents who allow that to happen, too!

Oh yeah, 2100 international journalists are there too....I would love to see a HUGE Puppet Theater (heads on giant popsicle sticks) dancing behind these whacko-jacko-whackos

:woohoo:
