The Confederate Flag Racist...OK...What About the Saint George Cross?
or are the two not comparable? Is the SG cross a proud symbol of English heritage or not worthy of celebration?

3. Interestingly....
The Knights Templar first started wearing this insignia, after their dissolution, a whole lot of countries integrated it inot their own.

4. I Have Seen The Cross As a Symbol Of England Before...
but truthfully, I had not seen it widely in use until the '98 World Cup. Now, I see it constantly. I have wondered what has led to it's resurrection as a symbol. The Union Jack seems out of favor. It seems that is more important to be English than British.

5. Well, the Union Jack is for the UK. The Cross is for just England
Which is why you see it in the World Cup, as the various parts of the UK have their own teams.

6. I Realize That....
English football fans have used the Union Jack in the past as a symbol, even though the team represents England. Now they use the Cross of Saint George almost exclusively. This quote from a message board on the Campaign for an English Parliament website kind of sums it up.

I'm afraid I must agree with Richard Stone. The Union is drifting apart, I can remember when English supporters sections of stadiums were a forest of Union Jacks, nowaday it is largely the Cross of St George.

We are becoming more concious south of the Border of our differences. We realise that while in the past most of us were pleased to see a Scottish(or Welsh) team do well against any other team than England, that north of the Border they actually celebrate English defeats.

As someone who has distant Scottish ancestors this well ticks me off.

Much of the blame for the slow drift apart belongs to the present government. Tony Blair is at the point of his premiership where he is becoming concerned with his personal legacy, how he will be remembered.

7. I can't speak to that at all.
I haven't the knowledge base to really comment. I freely admit my ignorance.
