Poll question: Do you consider yourself a feminist?
I know many people eschew labels and the definitions vary, but if you had to chose a label and based on how *you* define feminism, pick your answer.

1. Yes...
I'm male and I consider myself a feminist. And it shocks me when I hear a young woman say "I'm not a feminist"... :wow:

2. Aren't you concerned that some
may consider you some sort of "girlie man"?

8. Bring it on...
Since I'm gay I would probably be considered a "girlie man" anyway so who cares? :P

4. Feminism is the radical notion...
...that an ad on DailyKos for Gilligan's Island that links to a clip of a pie fight should cause a split to another blog and formation of a women's caucus on the former blog.

NOTE: This is just a joke.

6. Question for those who said no
I'm female and feminist, for the record.

What views do you who answered "no" have that are not feminist?

10. so a feminist group was created on DU and suddenly
all the feminist threads are created in General Discussion? Can't we help the new group out and post all of this there?

OK, maybe I shouldn't judge since I'm posting on the threads. ;) To answer the original question, yes I'm a feminist and a woman. It took the blood, sweat and tears of a lot of women before me to get where I am today and I refuse to drop the ball for the next generation. Feminism isn't an interest, it's a responsibility to my daughter.

And talk it up a bit. :-)

FWIW, I just posted this today in response to another poster's thread. I think if you look at the poll responses, its point may become more apparent.

14. Hell, I'm more of a feminist than my wife is.

But, she's run across some "feminist" bosses who were worse than the men. The kind that equate "feminist" with being "tough" and ambitious.
It's always amazed me that some alleged feminists adopt the same tactics and demeanor as the very worst of "macho" men.

Just to elaborate a bit:

I'm 6'3" about 250, ex-marine, decidedly straight, worked in construction when I was younger, and all that "masculine" stuff. Have yet to have anyone call me a "girly-man" and rather expect that no one will. I just happen to believe that women are discrimated against in our society as much as any minority is. And, that discrimination that forces subservience is wrong. Anyone who thinks that women aren't getting the short end of the stick isn't paying attention.
