10. Good question
I didn't know that it was going to be the "President's Education Award", and funny thing, the principal didn't announce that it was until all the kids that received it were up standing in a line.

It is for kids who achieve a 3.87 or above GPA (my daughter is 4.0--but I'm not bragging :D ) and for kids who also scored at or above 85% on their ITB tests. You should have seen her face when he announced that it was the President's award!

19. Agreed
I received a President's physical fitness award when I was her exact age--8th grade--Sad thing is, there wasn't this feeling about things--Carter was in office. She's much more politically aware than I was anyway.

How to teach her respect for such an award with Bush & Co. in office has been very challenging, in all honesty. Lately, she won't even say the Pledge of Allegiance, and says she won't until Bush & Co. are gone.

Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 12:25 AM by Emit
"Bush died, Soldiers died, and you don't care!" really well. He learned it from the protests we did this past summer--we got a lot of Bush and Cheney here in Nevada.

Edit: To add, she says her homeroom teacher just glares at her, and I had expected to get a call from him. I would've backed her up all the way, even though we had discussions to the effect that she can still love her country and hate her President. This is America, after all...and she should take advantage of that while she can!

I agree, these kids are gonna be the ones impacted the most.

She was literally beaming, until the Principal said "President's Award" and the look on her face...well, I just hope we caught it on camera. Kid's have a funny way of showing raw emotion that adults have learned to hide.

She won an award for Mathematics (yay, I'm so proud of her!), and at the awards ceremony they also gave out the President's Education Award. Even my 9 year old snickered at the irony of W giving out an award for being smart. LOL.

Should only be given to someone who educates this President.

My Nomination: John Conyers. Can I hear a Second? Are there any other nominees??

(By the way Emit... congrats to your daughter. She's probably already smarter than the President. :applause: )

My liberal Mom didn't freak when I won awards signed by Reagan.

It's your daughter's award, not Shrub-a-Dub's.

You should be proud! I'm proud for you! (I have a son that won all kinds of awards in kindergarten this year - we're looking forward to more academic acheivements in first grade!)

45. Congrats to him!
I have a kindergartener, too, and she's "graduating" tomorrow.

You know, your message gave me pause because I was in the bleachers when they announced the type of award, so she couldn't see my response or anything. But her own response was shock, I think, and then rolling of the eyes, a thumbs down, etc. as teenagers do. Anyway, when we found each other in the crowd afterward, it was the first thing she commented about.

Isn't it sad that such an achievement has to be tainted with these thoughts? That I'm of course proud, but that she, being only 14, thinks differently about the award because Bush's signature is on it.

44. I got it three times...
(insert shameless brag)

I got it all three times I was eligable:

5th grade, signed by Reagan
8th, signed by Bush
12th, signed by Clinton

The Clinton one is the only one that matters to me. It's the only one I still have tucked away in my folder of school awards.

(end shameless brag)

Seriously, it's been around since at least 1988 when I got the first one. It's a nice thing for the kids to bring home and go "Mommy look!" and put on the fridge if the kids are young. If the kids are older and political, then give them the option to burn it.

Moron? You've got to be kidding? That's really sad that such an error could be made..but oh, what am I thinking---it's Bush era!

Hey, by the way, my youngest daughter's middle name is Miren, similar to yours, huh?--meaning "of the sea" or "sea white, sea fair." "The very appropriate name of the 6th century mermaid caught by a fisherman in Lough Neagh. He brought her to St. Comghall who baptized her which transformed her into a woman", according to one source.
