In evangelical world, a liberal view steps up
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8131907/

Finding evangelicals outside the box
Like Jimmy Carter, Tony Campolo is a tireless campaigner for social justice, especially for the poor, for the environment and for oppressed populations in the Third World. Like Carter, he is also an evangelical Christian — a Baptist minister, in fact.

Although many Americans see evangelicalism as a monolithic construct, “in reality, there are a whole lot of us evangelicals who think differently,” said Campolo, who founded the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education.

Campolo puts the proportion of “progressive” or liberal American evangelicals at 35 percent to 40 percent. Other scholars say that is probably too high; the leading authority on religious populations in America, John Green of the University of Akron in Ohio, puts it closer to 20 percent.

Whoever is correct, one thing is clear: There are millions of progressive evangelicals. And yet, the conventional wisdom resolves to a very simple equation: “Evangelical” = “religious right.”

2. Yep, the real Evangelical's are being...
left behind. Pun intended. They don't get the far right any more than we do. Besides, Bush has not followed his faith with works. His works have hurt everybody, the preachers are mad and disenchanted.
The wacko's are one of a kind, the minority really.

3. You sound about right to me.
Every one in my family were in the GOP right down to giving a good deal of money, Not one thought like the Bush people. About the only carry over I can see is my family, they also did not like unions. They were all small business men and worked for them selfs and started their own businesses. Each had trouble, in a bad way, with unions.Looking back I see how very easy they were with the people who worked for them. Each always saying that these people had families also and errors sometimes are made. I see none of this in our new GOP. I also see unions are good but need control.

4. I emailed Carter's library
And told him that we support him and want progressive evangelicals to counter Falwell et al. The more they do that, the less power and money the New Trinity has.

I rarely start threads, but this one hit me as toooo many here will recognize that all Muslims are not the same, but will mot give the same thought to Christens, and even I tend to lump all Baptists to B*'s Baptists.

9. Yeah, they are out there. The problem is that the Robertsons, Falwells,
and Dobsons of the world get all the media coverage, and then the media, rather than point out their radical agenda the media just acts as though only Republicans have religious beliefs.
