William River Pitt on the Patriot Act
There have been wonderful and brilliant writers and their articles, essays, editorials, and comments on the subject of our country that I have been proud to have read since finding DU - this is one of the most important and brilliantly written - any of our apathetic and look-away friends can understand it.

3. liked this line of Tom Paine's
Thomas Paine once said, "If there is to be trouble, let it be in my day, so my child may be safe." We did not want this trouble, but we've got it. I ask you, here and now, to make trouble for those who would trouble us with this terrible law.

This is a good one Will. Congrats on all your writing
and speechmaking.

5. Yes that's a great quote
I also like Gandolfs from lords of the rings

" So do all that live in such times Frodo"

"It is what you do with the time you are given"

4. Great article
I'm going to post a link to it at another message board where we have been debating the patriot act. One woman said the patriot act made us more free, because we wouldn't have to worry about terrorists!

6. Does the Patriot Act look more or less sinister as U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. ?
When it's spoken it hardly matters, but written as Patriot, to me it looks more like its about patriotism, which it sure the hell isn't.

Looks aren't everything, but when you're trying to identify a wolf in sheeps clothing...looks are something.

7. He's a National Treasure
Maybe he will do a follow-up to the UberCroft and this late breaker...
from WSJ article quoted here at
http://www.talkleft.com/archives/004357.html#004357

"WASHINGTON -- Attorney General John Ashcroft, in a move that would further centralize prosecutorial power to Justice Department headquarters, is considering an order to U.S. attorneys to cut back significantly on plea bargaining with criminal defendants. The order, which could be issued as early as today, would require federal prosecutors to "charge and pursue the facts" of the cases they file, and notes that charges shouldn't be filed simply to exert leverage to induce a plea."

Essentially Asscrap has sent out a memo ordering all federal prosecutors to offer only the maximums!!
No plea bargaining...

I feel safer knowing pot-smoking cancer victims and Tommy Chong are behind bars

11. Excellent
I must admit to being less informed about the Patriot Act than I should be. Legalese makes my eyes glass over. But Mr. Pitt's arguments are sensible and compelling.
