I thought you'd want to see this cartoon from the ACLU. I'm supporting the ACLU's campaign to reform the Patriot Act Keep reading to find out how you can get involved.

There are significant flaws in the Patriot Act, flaws that threaten your fundamental freedoms by giving the government the power to access to your medical records, tax records, information about the books you buy or borrow without probable cause, and the power to break into your home and conduct secret searches without telling you for weeks, months, or indefinitely.

Some of these flawed provisions are set to expire at the end of the year. But President Bush wants to make them permanent, and the House and Senate have been holding hearings in preparation for votes that are expected this June and July.

The Patriot Act doesn’t have to be a fact of life. We have an opportunity to stop Congress from expanding government surveillance and removing proper checks and balances.

This morning Rep. Sensenbrenner, the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee was leading a committee hearing looking into the renewal of Patriot Act.

Mr. Sensenbrenner decided that he didn't like the tone of the meeting and simply got up and left but not before he criticized the witnesses who came and gave their testimony to the committee.

After he left the microphones were switched on and off while the Democratic members of the committee continued to discuss the renewal of the Patriot Act.

SAFE Act

The PATRIOT Act allows the widespread use of intrusive "sneak and peek" search warrants, in which government agents can break into a home and take information without notifying the home's owner.

This week, several Members of Congress introduced bipartisan legislation to fix problems in the PATRIOT Act without weakening any of the new authority it provided to fight terrorism. The Security and Freedom Enhancement (SAFE) Act (S 737/HR 1526) would add key checks and balances on some PATRIOT Act provisions prone to abuse.
