and damned if the nice guy I married didn't turn himself into a drunk, so I know the signs pretty well. I'm also a nurse with a few years in neuropsychiatry logged on her running shoes, so I know all the more subtle signs.

I'm convinced he is still a binge drinker when he's sent his wife out on a goodwill trip and he doesn't have any corporate shakedowns scheduled. I think this because his neurological condition is continuing to deteriorate. It would have been stabilized 10 years ago if he'd actually managed to love Jesus enough to quit drinking. It has gotten steadily worse, evidenced by the disorganized thoughts, the disconjugate gaze, the occasional ataxic gait, the slurred speech, the obvious facial droop.

This isn't a character flaw in and of itself. The only way to heal the disease of alcoholism is through appropriate treatment, and he hasn't received it. Men who quit drinking through will power or religious conversion or just because they're sick of being nagged have a very poor prognosis when it comes to staying off booze long term.
