Them's appalled by comparisons to a Gulag
The repeated yowling of the republicans and the like about how outraged they are that someone would compare Guantanamo to a Gulag indicates that they have a problem with self-criticism.

Criticizing the country you live in, is effectively self-criticism.

It's not anti-grandmother to say she has cancer.

I notice these same people also tend to not understand the concept of hypocrisy (or at least pretend they don't). For example, pointing out Bush avoiding going to Vietnam is not understood as hypocrisy, instead it's taken as a "Gotcha", as if the point were that he is cowardly.

1. They can be appalled, shock, in awe, whatever, but it still does
not change the fact that what is happening down there goes against every tenet we have ever known. As a Mother of A Son who is going to Afghanistan, I would like to think if he was ever captured, he would be treated humanly. This does not help his cause, this does not help America's cause....

3. They use language tricks to try to stifle dissent
so that they can continue doing what they want, how they want to.

Notice that DeLay is still around? They've outwaited our outrage.

4. I think pointing out their aversion to self-criticism would be
a good response when they do it, in a dialog/debate etc. It would make them defend their righteous image.

It's a pattern: "You're tearing down the greatest defender of human rights in history (the united states of America)."

Let's respond by challenging their character, "why do you fear holding your country up to a high standard", instead of by defending our characterization "well it is like a Gulag because...".
