'Chipmunks' records patron dead (remember: Alvin, Simon and Theodore)

Simon Waronker, the founder of Liberty Records, a successful pop-music label of the 1950s and '60s whose artists ranged from Eddie Cochran to Alvin and the Chipmunks, died Tuesday in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 90.

Liberty Records, founded in 1955, boasted a talent roster that included artists such as Julie London ("Cry Me a River"), Martin Denny ("Quiet Village"), Cochran ("Summertime Blues"), Johnny Burnette ("You're Sixteen"), Gene McDaniels ("Tower of Strength") and Timi Yuro ("Hurt").

The Liberty label also scored major hits with the novelty recordings of Alvin and the Chipmunks, a group created by Ross Bagdasarian under the stage name David Seville.

The Chipmunks also earned Mr. Waronker a footnote in pop-culture history: Liberty President Alvin Bennett, Mr. Waronker and chief engineer Theodore Keep are the Chipmunks' namesakes--Alvin, Simon and Theodore.

4. Ross, with his cousin (?) William Saroyan, the author

also wrote "Come On-A My House" the fifties hit for Rosemary Clooney

so he wasn't only animal obsessed - musically speaking, of course.

5. Don't forget Liberty's thoughtful recordings of "forgotten" artists
such as The Four Freshmen, The HiLo's, and Nellie Lutcher. I'll always prize those mid-60s post-Beatlemania releases.
Thanks Liberty!

We like to go swimmin'
We like to watch movies,
With pretty women,
We like to eat pizza, play ping-pong too,
But we don't like to clean the hous, scrub the floors, -- do-oo you?
We like to have lots of fun and sing these songs for yoooooo!
