The Repukes are crowing about all the "new millionaires" and
I've been thinking about that.

1. Second homes count. A $100,000.00 investment in a Florida condo is now worth $400,000.00 in inflated bubble dollars, a big leg up towards that mill.

2. A guy with $4 million dies and leaves his millions to his four kids. Presto, four new millionaires. The economy is on the move!

3. Some shlub wins the lottery, shazzam! a new millionaire, times are good!

So I say "bullshit."

1. That was the "talking point" on CNN this morning...

Letters in response to the question (something like..) "Why do you think there are so many new millionaires?" were, I'd say, more than half negative toward the Bush administration. Several people really laid it on the line referring to the "corporate White House," and "corporate media." I was encouraged.

2. Note how they say nary a peep on the increasing numbers of destitute.
Spin spin spin.

They won't look at the table. Only their plate.

(many Dems have the same problem too, but we're not in power. Once we are, I'll make the same accusation if they act the same. We the people are supposed be accountable for those we elect. Right?)

11. When you're poor, you don't exist. Might as well be invisible.

Or depression.

6. For every new millionaire
there are a hundred people tottering on the brink of homelessness. Let them crow about that.

10. and a thousand households
who are barely taking home (in real terms) what they did 20 years ago.

The real story is the stagnation in the average American's standard of living during the Reagan/Bush I/Bush II years.

Pauls Krugman recently gave a figure of a 20% increase in real family income since 1970, most of which was due to longer working hours and more spouses holding down jobs.

8. I would really like to see some statistics on the numbers
Edited on Fri Jun-10-05 05:07 PM by olafvikingr
of people that have moved into poverty, out of the middle class etc? Or perhaps even hard numbers as far as what the average salary is for someone in the middle class, average income overall, and how these numbers reflect when compared to previous years. My common sense sensor tells me that there are so many more millionaires because there are WAY more paupers.

Say you have a middle class family of 4 living on $60,000 a year, a modest two income family, someone with a million bucks could support almost 17 similar families.

A few more people are becoming part of the "haves" while alot more people become part of the "have-nots".

600,000 more millionaires, 10.2 million more $60,000 fincome families without. I know it doesn't work that way, but an interesting way to look at it.

9. That is how Repubicans sell the bullshit
"See, look, you will be a millionare someday. And when that day comes, won't you be glad that we are using 'trickle down' economics to ensure that you will never have to pay your fair share again!"

12. The state of the economy should be judged
on how many there are on the lower levels and how they are doing. When Clinton was President even the lowest were lifted up and there was just about zero unemployment.
