Constantine Menges passed away before his book, "China: The Gathering Threat," was published. During this event at the Hudson Institute, a panel of friends and colleagues who were inspired by Menges' work talk about Menges and the arguments he makes in his book concerning the economic and military threat posed by China. Joining the discussion are: Bill Gertz of the Washington Times, William Hawkins of the U.S. Business and Industry Council, Al Santoli of the Asia America Initiative, and Michael Pillsbury, author of "China Debates the Future Security Environment." Constantine Menges' wife, Nancy Menges, makes opening remarks and Hudson Institute president Herbert London moderates the discussion. Includes Q&A.

Author Bio: Constantine Menges, former CIA national intelligence officer and former special assistant to President Reagan for national security affairs, was a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. He was a central planner for the 1983 invasion of Grenada. He authored several books, including "Inside the National Security Council: The True Story of the Making and Unmaking of Reagan's Foreign Policy" and "The Twilight Struggle: The Soviet Union v. the United States Today."

faith-based morality
By far, the biggest names in the social science (economics/philosophy/psychology/political science/law) are Gary Becker and Richard Posner. Posner is guestblogging this week at Leiter Reports. His first essay is on a very interesting and important topic, one I spent a fair amount of time talking about in my decision making class last term.



The question is where morality comes from. What makes killing, lying, stealing, cheating, etc. “wrong?” Some people think morality comes from God and the Bible. Other people think that what makes something right or wrong has to do with the consequences for everyone affected.

The second view – reason-based morality is called utilitarianism. It was invented by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Peter Singer, a philosopher at Princeton is the most famous utilitarian alive today.

The first view – faith-based morality might be called authoritarianism.

I am a very big fan of reason-based morality. I think that Becker and Posner are also, but I wasn’t quite sure after reading Posner’s wordy, confusing essay. Here are some replies to some of his comments:

RP: Think of the rejection in our society of the Islamic punishment code, public nudity, polygamy, indentured servitude, chain gangs, voluntary gladiatorial combat, forced redistribution of wealth, preventive war, torture, the mutilation of corpses, sex with corpses, sex with nonobjecting animals, child labor, duelling, suicide, euthanasia, arranged marriages, race and sex discrimination. Are there really compelling reasons for these unarguable tenets of the current American moral code?

DF: Actually, JP, yes. Some prohibitions (child labor, torture, sex with nonobjecting (sic) animals) are more reasonable than others (euthanasia, suicide, homosexuality, inter-racial marriage). Some (preventive war) are very much up for grabs.

Michael Good profiles the life of Nazi army officer Major Karl Plagge. In "The Search for Major Plagge," the author recounts how the officer saved his mother, Pearl, and 250 Jews from death in a concentration camp Lithuania during the Holocaust. Mr. Good explains that he decided to research Major Plagge's story after visiting Lithuania in the summer of 1999. This event was hosted by the Durham Public Library in Connecticut.

Author Bio: Dr. Michael Good is a physician in Durham, Connecticut. His father, William Good, survived the war after escaping execution by the Nazis.

On August 28th, 1955 fourteen year-old Emmett Till was killed allegedly for whistling at a white woman outside a grocery store in Money, Mississippi. Author and poet Marilyn Nelson writes about the legacy of Emmett Till in her book, "A Wreath for Emmett Till." The book is a collection of poems created as a written memorial to the boy whose death, 50 years ago this year, would later be seen as a catalyst for the Civil Rights movement.

Author Bio: Marilyn Nelson is a poet and the author of "Carver: A Life in Poems" and "The Fields of Praise." Her work has won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, Newbery Honor, Coretta Scott King Honor, and the Stieglitz-Straus Award. Ms. Nelson is a poetry professor at the University of Connecticut.

From the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress, a panel discussion on the world refugee situation during the 1990s. The panel was held in conjunction with the release of former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Sadako Ogata's new book, "The Turbulent Decade: Confronting the Refugee Crises of the 1990s." With Ms. Ogata on the panel is former Nato Supreme Allied Commander of Europe Gen. Wesley Clark. Gen. Clark worked closely with Ms. Ogata when both were high-ranking officials during the crisis in Kosovo in the early 1990s. The discussants also address the current global climate and the potential for future refugees. The panel is moderated by Washington Post staff writer Dana Priest.

Author Bio: Sadako Ogata was the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 1991 to 2000. Ms. Ogata currently serves as president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency in Tokyo.

While working as a reporter, Mr. Taibbi had a seat on John Kerry's campaign plane, attended Howard Dean press conferences, and worked undercover at a Republican campaign office in Orlando, Florida. The author sits down with Will Dana, managing editor of the Rolling Stone, to discuss his writing style and the problems he faced finding new story ideas and getting along with the other reporters. This event was hosted by Housing Works Used Book Café in New York City.

Author Bio: Matt Taibbi is a columnist for the New York Press and a contributing editor to Rolling Stone. Mr. Taibbi worked as a jounalist in Russia and edited the satirical magazine The eXile for ten years.

That's the case made by New York Times assistant managing editor Craig Whitney in his book, "The WMD Mirage: Iraq's Decade of Deception and America's False Premise for War." Mr. Whitney talks about his book at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City and is joined in the discussion by Patricia Wald, Commissioner of the Committee on the Intelligence Capabilities of the U.S. Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction; and Charles Duelfer, former head of the Iraq Survey Group. The panelists talk about the failures of the American intelligence community as well as the current state of WMD in Iraq.

Author Bio: Craig Whitney is assistant managing editor of the New York Times and the editor of "The WMD Mirage: Iraq's Decade of Deception and America's False Premise for War." He has worked for the New York Times as a reporter, European diplomatic correspondent, and foreign editor. Judge Patricia Wald served as assistant U.S. attorney general for legislative affairs during much of the Carter administration, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 1979, and was chief judge of the court from 1986 to 1991. She was appointed to the Federal Appeals Court and after retiring from the court in 1999, she spent two years in The Hague as a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Charles Duelfer is a former head of the State Department's Center for Defense Trade, former Deputy head of the UNSCOM weapons inspection agency in Iraq, and in January 2004 he replaced David Kay as the leader of the Iraq Survey Group.
