GOP Sen. Suggests Closing Guantanamo Camp
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050611/ap_on_go_co/martinez_guantanamo

KEY WEST, Fla. - Sen. Mel Martinez said the Bush administration should consider closing the Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorism suspects — the first high-profile Republican to make the suggestion.

"It's become an icon for bad stories and at some point you wonder the cost-benefit ratio," Martinez said Friday. "How much do you get out of having that facility there? Is it serving all the purposes you thought it would serve when initially you began it, or can this be done some other way a little better?"

3. They are reading the polls.
They know what is coming and they don't like it a bit.

As for the wonderful men and women serving in Iraq, I say: I know you want to find meaning and purpose in your mission. That is normal, natural and expected. We want to see you come home whole and healthy. We know now that you were deployed on the basis of lies and dark ambitions, things unworthy of your life and limb.

We want you back amongst us and god willing, you will soon be back.

Then we will all get to work, healing this nation.

4. Now they want a graceful exit after the Supreme Court ruling
a few months ago. Read The Torture Papers Edited by Karen Greenberg and Joshua Dratel and you will see how deep the Repubs are in if their whole legal case is shown to be the sham it is. Dratel notes that last June the Supreme Court in Rasel v. Bush rejected the premise that Gitmo is beyond the jurisdiction of the of the US courts thus undermining all the legal conclusion WH attorney's built for their opinions that followed. This collection of memos and reports is very worth your time.
