BBV - somebody needs to inform Jerry Brown
He's got a lot of influence over voting machine issues in CA. He was just on CNN dissing those who object to touch screen. Someone needs to get to him and educate him.

DemActivist, am I remembering right that our friend the documentary filmmaker is friends with Jerry Brown? I could ask him. I owe him a note anyway...

3. Didn't know that...
but if you say so, go for it.

The filmmaker seems to be in contact with others who are pushing on the wrong side of this issue....Brown is in their camp, evidently.

6. Source?
Hmmm...

Is Dana Latour still Diebold's western sales rep? Do you think she'd talk to him if he called?

5. Touchscreens can't go bad...
A few years ago I was parking my car in a city I will not name when a sewer main backed up and flooded the street with raw sewage.

The city crew got there in about ten minutes and the first thing they did was was pull the grate off of a nearby stormdrain so the sewage could flow freely into a nearby creek.

It took them almost two hours to fix the sewer, and meanwhile the sewage continued to flow down the storm drain. When the sewer was fixed, they did a quick cleanup of the area around the stormdrain's outfall, and then they were done.

I was talking to one of the crew, and he said their SOP was not to file any sort of paperwork because that would only cause a lot of trouble for everyone. "Don't ask, don't tell..."

I'd really hate to think Jerry Brown is ignoring the smell, but with all the other smelly things going on in Oakland, it's not surprising he hasn't noticed touchscreen voting machines yet.

7. No, hes noticed and hes contradicted himself apparently.
Ive never 'gotten' the attraction to Jerry Brown.

When he sided with the overzealous police officers after they had shot rubber bullets into the crowd and injured defenseless citizens, I wrote him a polite letter (however) reminding him of his early youthful days in the protest lines and his days as an activist, and that those activists on the streets that day in Oakland were doing it so that we all may maintain our right to free speech and to assemble.

Never heard a word back from his office.

To not receive even a generalized response from his office was confirmation of my initial reaction to Mr. Brown. This could become further confirmation of his consistency, or lack thereof.

8. Maybe when it's squishing between his toes...
We desperately need a politician who is willing to become the lightening rod in this storm, otherwise the house is likely to burn down.

9. What's with Jerry Brown anyway?
He's sounding more and more like a Republican. He also said he thought the recall was a good thing. Is he following Dennis Miller to the right?

12. I only understand it from an acctg. POV.
I'm lost on the techie part. But single-entry without an audit trail invites fraud. Also, it's impossible to find honest errors with single-entry. That's why it is a poor way to do things even if all poll workers and candidates were totally honest.

13. "Influence" in the traditional sense doesn't matter...
Imagine next summer...

It's hot, hotter than it's ever been in history, the power grid isn't reliable, the air conditioning is rationed, and there are political and economic crisis everywhere you look.

And kids are getting drafted.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to throw crooked voting machines into that mix, especially into any "under-represented" community.

I remember during the Viet Nam war how my grandfather, a World War II officer, kept saying what a "splendid opportunity" the war was for "colored folks."

Fuck yeah, and look at Colin Powell.

14. surprising to me
I've been a long time follower of Jerry Brown going way back to the late 1970s. He was always the pilar of integrity. Has he sold out now too? I am truly shocked if this is the case.

What has he done in Oakland anyway? The only thing I was aware of is that is was operating better than it had in the past and the crime wasn't as bad supposedly. Are these falsehoods?

Please advise if you happen to have details.

I agree - the touchscreen voting machines are something to be viewed with a jaundiced eye at best. :grr:
