Police Avert Attack On HALLIBURTON in Nigeria: They don't pay their bills!
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 09:49 AM by Bluebear
Police in Port Harcourt weekend averted what could have snowballed into a major face-off between a multi-billion naira oil servicing firm, Halliburton Nigeria over alleged non payment of rented property with the family of Late society lady, Lawrita Ineba Tagoe assassinated nine years ago.

Eye witness said youths numbering more than 50 stormed the warehouse of Halliburton situated on plot 127 Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout, Port Harcourt but met strong resistance by a team of mobile policemen who arrived earlier

Eldest brother of the assassinated lady, Prince Joseph Onwuchekwu claimed that Halliburton was owing him six years rent amounting to about N15 million being his share of a section of the property now occupied by the company.

When THISDAY visited Halliburton's warehouse some armed policemen were seen milling around the building with fresh palm leaves used by the youths littering the environment.

Editorial: Many Questions for Halliburton

The Halliburton case will not just go away. Despite the massive sleaze involved, especially with the disappearance and reappearance of nuclear materials and the tax evasion scandal, the company is still doing business in the country and defending itself all over the place.

It sounds strange that somebody will take the trouble of taking nuclear materials from Nigeria and same will be recovered intact from him from a scrapyard in Germany. This thief therefore did not benefit from this highly dangerous and expensive act of his! And by what divine wisdom was this material traced from Nigeria to Germany? With custom papers or what? And how come the people who stole have not been arrested and prosecuted in Germany?

And as for the tax consultant it engaged to clean up its act, how come no due diligence was done before an individual was engaged and a cheque for $2.3million (dollars, not Naira!) handed to him? Why not engage a corporate body (there are many competent and reputable firms offering this service) as tax consultants? Why an individual? Why not verify that this person had actually left Federal Board of Inland Revenue? Why an ex-staff of FBIR, if not to use his connection to help in true tax liability, the way NEPA staff can clean out huge overdue bills? Was a crossed cheque used to make payment to FBIR? Or a bank transfer? Into whose account was this payment credited? How did Halliburton arrive at the sum of $3.4million offered FBIR as outstanding arrears? Owning up and reporting oneself is not proof of good conduct. It could be done to stave off an imminent and inevitable investigation, or mitigate the punishment. As for the fate of the Nigerian employees, there should be no problems with another American (of truly good and ethical practices) company taking over the operations of Halliburton and engaging these employees. A lot of us may not be quite sharp, but that Halliburton rebuttal treats Nigerians as idiots. This is not acceptable.

1. why don't they use their "bonus" that the U.S. taxpayers gave the scum
to pay this piddly little bill. Or they can use their share of the $9 billion they stole from the U.S. taxpayers.

2. Halliburton surely had a post-invasion plan for Iraq, didn't they?
Steal, loot and pillage the US taxpayer.

4. Halliburton IS this administration!
Despite all the protestations that Cheney is not CEO anymore. His fingerprints are still all over their modus operandi and he still gets a check from them every year.

6. Hey! Halliburton has an obligation to its shareholders
Not to mention its retainers like Vice President Dick Cheney to remain obscenely profitable, and it can't do that by paying its bills.
