Preemptive retraction?
Someone must have gotten fired for thinking the AP was a news agency. The problem has since been rectified I gather.

So you can safely turn to the color comics page in your local Sunday advertising rag, and ignore all this DSM hullaballoo. It will just give you a headache anyway.

In other words: Move on. There is nothing to see here.

Let me see if I've got this right. Stickdog googled the latest DSM minutes a couple of hours ago, and got a long list of newspaper sites which were carrying an AP story re: said minutes. When you go to each of the sites now (and I did), you get an error message saying that file cannot be found or has been pulled. Sounds like Rove has been busy on the phone this AM.

..U.K. Memo Said to Question Postwar Plan
By Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- A staff paper prepared for British Prime Minister Tony Blair eight months before the invasion of Iraq concluded that U.S. military officials were not planning adequately for a postwar occupation, The Washington Post reported.

"A post-war occupation of Iraq could lead to a protracted and costly nation-building exercise," authorities of the briefing memo wrote, according to the Post. "As already made clear, the U.S. military plans are virtually silent on this point. Washington could look to us to share a disproportionate share of the burden."

all of them, at least 44 have disappeared.

Try it yourself. Search google news for "eight-page memo was written in advance" (type in the quotes).

Then press "sort by date".

The links on the first page and the last 3 pages are all still there. In the middle pages (within results 11-90), more than half of them are now gone. It's like somebody handed you a wad of cash except half of the bills in the middle are just blank green paper.

37. Sorry.....No Conspiracy Here
Associated Press articles appearing on newspaper/TV/Radio sites "expire" depending on the subscription arrangement with each individual news outlet. Some expire after as little as 12 hours, many after 24 hours. They automatically return an error message after expiration. Some of the larger markets will rewrite AP copy to keep an exclusively AP report longer. These AP stories are simply expiring - no conspiracy.

disappeared.

So please, try again. And cut it with the condescension next time.

I'm not saying it's a "conspiracy." I'm simply commenting on a true event, and looking for an explanation. When I first noticed the articles disappearing, they were all between 4 and 10 hours old according to google news.

43. No, that just gives you those "related stories"
the search is, I believe, for a specific AP Story.
That Story is disappearing before our eyes
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=%22Memo+Said+to+Question+Postwar+Plan%22&btnG=Search+News

I just don't know what to think.
The story is disappearing.
There were several pages of listings for that AP article, then super fast, only 4 sources on one page left.
but is this just a matter of natural course, or a "cleansing"?
Does anybody know for sure if this is business as usual,
or a deliberate attempt to reduce the impact and sources of an incriminating story?

Its not uncommon for something to hit the wire and suddenly get 300+ hits. Then, if its not put into the print edition of that local paper, it disappears. I.E. I've observed this behavior numerous times.

51. You are confusing the issue. 44 of these links went missing when this
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 06:12 PM by stickdog
story was between 4 and 9 hours old. Why?

Now that many of these are over 12 hours old, you are trying to foist the explanation that they expire after 12 hours.

But you are full of crap. I've been watching this story since I woke up this morning to see how many papers carried this story. Look at this page right now:

http://tinyurl.com/avy5l

Now that these storied have been posted for over 12 hours, you say, "See, they expired after 12 hours."

However, it's now after 7:00 PM EDT. And I posted that they were already missing right here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=3841240&mesg_id=3841334&page=

So are you telling me that these wire stories expired in less than 8 hours? What the hell kind of new service would that be?

I don't believe that wire stories expire in 12 hours, either, and you've offered nothing but your say so as evidence of that contention. But even if you are correct about these supposed 12 hour wire licenses (which I find highly doubtful), THAT'S DOESN'T EXPLAIN WHY THESE 44 LINKS DISAPPEARED LONG BEFORE THEY'D BEEN POSTED FOR 12 HOURS.

50. Something more is going on?
Search rerun exactly as originally posted by stickdog. 15 hits.
-- including yahoo, aol, and freerepublic (but not du).

Search rerun without quote marks. 774 hits.
--Many not related to the intended memo. There seem to be a lot of eight page memos on a variety of topics out there. Is there some secret guideline on memo writing that I don't know about?

Search within previous result for Blair. 251 hits.
--More newspapers show up here, including some which did not use the exact wording originally requested (e.g., Washington Post).

Search for american idol winner AP: about 193,000 hits
--I checked about 10 newspapers here. Only one story not available. (I admit this is a small sample.) Some of the AP stories were dated June 9, over 48 hours ago. A Chicago Tribune article was dated May 26. Note that even the dead link was still returned by Google.

Search for "jury instructions were too broad": 3,730 hits
Search for "jury instructions were too broad" Enron: 3,720 hits
--This was a search for the AP article on the Supreme Court decision overturning the conviction of Arthur Andersen. The AP version of this news is still available at many newspapers, some of which explicitly state that archives are available for 14 days. For example, the Casper Star Tribune, which was on stickdog's original post and apparently does not currently have the eight-page memo story, does have the earlier Enron story and many other AP stories available.

Since many other AP stories are available from the newspapers in question, it appears that something more is going on here than simple expiration. However, I do not have a background in journalism and would appreciate it if someone who does would expand upon the comment by DWolper.

You get 122 hits when doing this search on Google News and 15 on Google Web. It's the same whether or not quotes or hyphens are used.

Even with the 122 hits, there still seem to be a lot of 404's or equivalent.

56. Note that nearly all the links you give have the same form
ending in 'ap/headlines/d8alv5ro1.txt' . I think this means that all the newspapers use the same set of headline stories from AP - so if the AP editor removes it, it automatically gets removed from all 44 (or however many are affected) at once. For instance, compare the story list at http://www.natchezdemocrat.com/articles/2005/06/12/ap/headlines and http://www.tribstar.com/articles/2005/06/12/ap/headlines - they're identical.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=post&forum=104&topic_id=3841410&mesg_id=3841410

If you go to the Minneapolis Star Tribune article referred to, you'll find the discussion concerns how the StarTrib learned about the DSM from e-mails from readers, then waited around for a wire service to break the story . . .

""We were frustrated the wires weren't providing stories on this," McGrath said. Finally, he gave up waiting for the wires and assigned reporter Sharon Schmickle to write about it -- despite the geographic disadvantage of reporting from Minneapolis on a story breaking in London."

Here is my standard letter to the Media:

Dear Sir/Madam:

As you know, on May 1 of this year a document now commonly referred to as “|The Downing Street Memo” was released into the British Press. This document raises serious question about how the administration was handling intelligence related to Iraq and appears to suggest that the Bush Administration had already decided on war when publicly it was claiming that no such decision had been made. Now further documents have been released in the British media which cast even further doubts.

These documents and other documents suggest that the Bush administration was determined to “fix intelligence” around a predetermined policy. Some of these documents make it clear that the administration had no credible plan for dealing with the post-war occupation.

It is most disturbing that there has been a virtual media blackout regarding “The Downing Street Minutes” and other disturbing documents.

Even more disturbing is the absence in the America media of any credible in-depth follow-up discussion or coverage regarding strong, credible and independent evidence that the Bush Administration intentionally mislead the U.S. Congress, the media and the American people.

I do hope you will accept the responsibility to address this issue and provide serious investigative journalism into this matter.

Furthermore, on Thursday June 16, 2005, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, and other House members will hold a hearing to consider testimony concerning the Downing Street minutes and questions of possible fixing of prewar intelligence. I do hope you will be giving full coverage to these events.

Sincerely,
