Or will there be a completely silent response ?

Or will there be just a "scattering" of 'boos'.

Tepid response, with a slight soft polite clap.

1. They will not boo
that would be undiplomatic.

Some of the most opposed may leave the room when he starts to speak, but one thing you can be assured of is that no one will boo him.

The people in that room, with the single exception of the Americans, are consummate diplomats and they would never boo a speaker.

Earth summit protesters shout down Powell

Jeers, chants of 'shame on Bush' drown out
U.S. Secretary of State's speech to delegates

By ALANNA MITCHELL

EARTH SCIENCES REPORTER

Thursday, September 5, 2002 – Print Edition, Page A13

Michael Green didn't expect to turn the closing plenary of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg into a bitter international denunciation of the U.S. government's role in the world.

...But when security officers tore down the banners ("Bush: People and Planet, not Big Business"), within minutes of their unfurling, it was too much. Mr. Green, executive director of the Center for Environmental Health in Oakland, Calif., overcome by emotion, broke with summit protocol and chanted "Shame on Bush."

....Hundreds of delegates and observers joined Mr. Green in the impromptu protest. They chanted. They jeered. They booed.

Mr. Powell was forced to stop speaking for several minutes. Eventually, organizers turned up his microphone, but he was booed into silence several more times until he could finish.
"It was appalling," Mr. Green said, "but it was also deserved."
Mr. Green was removed from the plenary room, along with about five others the security guards took to be ringleaders, Mr. Green said yesterday. Guards also confiscated his accreditation. Thirty others walked out in protest.

And last night, during the summit's final round of statements, the United States was booed again as its delegates said that the richest country in the world does not feel bound by the agreements it had made during summit negotiations.

9. wasn't it considered unusual
that the French delegate was applauded when he spoke against the invasion of Iraq?

seems like I remember hearing that one.

he was applauded, and Powell was not.

10. I suppose they have their code way of showing contempt;
reading the comics/mags/newspapers as Bush speaks is one of them.

Let us see.
