What do you think of DSM being called 'memogate'
It's the term The Sunday Times is calling it, should we refer to it the same way?

1. I've always hated the lame-ass "gate" suffix on every scandal.
Fucking stupid.

5. It trivializes the truth: that Bush sent US troops to die based on lies.
This is not another "gate." This is another order of magnitude altogether.

8. Gate seems to be the only word that gets the average American
attention besides sex. Using that word usually involves a juicy scandle. Might even get people away from reality TV for a day or 2. Or even the Michael Jackson trial.

9. The media's broken-record fixation with the "gate" suffix...
...is but one of many symptoms of the present-day plague of conformity (and ultimate stupidity) that afflicts today's English-language newspapers and broadcast outlets. The project originates in the unholy alliance of journalism schools and news-monopoly personnel offices: the former turn out graduates presumably skilled in techniques but abysmally ignorant of any background (history, sociology, art, literature) that might enable them to intelligently evaluate the events upon which they are reporting, just as the latter (which formulated the dullards-only demand in the first place) hire only the most bland, timid, guaranteed-not-to-rock-the-corporate-boat, lockstep conformists -- fretfully insecure and thus viciously backstabbing careerists one and all. The result is a microcosm of the yuppoid inability to formulate adequate analogies or even working metaphors: hence the drooling idiocy of yet another "memogate" rather than some appropriate (and telling) label like "Downing Street disclosures" or merely "the war plan scandal."

11. Freudian slip of the typewriter...
...in my use of the noun "project" in my second sentence above -- the term should have been "problem" -- but a truth nevertheless, in that our media's dimwittedness is in fact deliberate: those boardroom types can't allow us proletarians any information that might get us thinking, not now, not ever. Hence not only "Memogate" but "All Michael Jackson All the Time." (Gag reflex forcefully suppressed.)

10. too many xgates, it's a snoozer
at this point, I think using -gate on a story, turns a lot of people off.
We need to bust out with something punchy like "Operation Treason"

12. We need something snappy -- nominations?
Terms that pop into mind, just to stimulate thought...

Unprovoked Attack
High Crimes
War Criminal
Pre-emptive Lies
Secrets & Lies

I'm not getting anywhere - it is way past my bedtime. I do think we need something with a 'gate' on it...

Hey - maybe get in touch with the Freeway Blogger - he is great at this!

13. Can we think of a literary reference -- how about something from
Dante's Inferno? Tolstoy's War & Peace? Faust? A movie?

How about taking something Bush lied about and turning it back on him...

Here is my standard letter to the Media:

Dear Sir/Madam:

As you know, on May 1 of this year a document now commonly referred to as “|The Downing Street Memo” was released into the British Press. This document raises serious question about how the administration was handling intelligence related to Iraq and appears to suggest that the Bush Administration had already decided on war when publicly it was claiming that no such decision had been made. Now further documents have been released in the British media which cast even further doubts.

These documents and other documents suggest that the Bush administration was determined to “fix intelligence” around a predetermined policy. Some of these documents make it clear that the administration had no credible plan for dealing with the post-war occupation.

It is most disturbing that there has been a virtual media blackout regarding “The Downing Street Minutes” and other disturbing documents.

Even more disturbing is the absence in the America media of any credible in-depth follow-up discussion or coverage regarding strong, credible and independent evidence that the Bush Administration intentionally mislead the U.S. Congress, the media and the American people.

I do hope you will accept the responsibility to address this issue and provide serious investigative journalism into this matter.

Furthermore, on Thursday June 16, 2005, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, and other House members will hold a hearing to consider testimony concerning the Downing Street minutes and questions of possible fixing of prewar intelligence. I do hope you will be giving full coverage to these events.

Sincerely,

17. I'll settle for WARCRIMES-
conspiracy to commit an act of international aggression, lying to Congress, sundry violations of the Constitution and oath of office.

You want to put a -gate on the end of that, go ahead.
