Does anyone know what the highest Gallup DISAPPROVAL rating...

... for a president has ever been?

Bush is at 50% approval / 47% disapproval in the latest Gallup Poll, just out (http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2003-09-22-bush-poll_x.htm). But the subject came up in my earlier thread of whether or not any president has rated this high of a DISAPPROVAL number in Gallup (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=384053).

I'd venture a guess that Nixon did, but otherwise, I don't know, and I can't find Gallup disapproval numbers for past presidents. Pollkatz has a graphic or two showing Gallup presidential "approval" ratings (http://www.pollkatz.homestead.com/), but not "disapproval".

Anyone have any links, or numbers?

2. I think it was Nixon, but I have no numbers.

His numbers didn't crater, though, until he was at he brink of impeachment. It took a lot longer to wear him down than we would think.

I would GUESStimate that Slippery Dick's last disapproval number was around 65%.

Approval Ratings of Presidents: The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research maintains "Online Access to Data" with a Presidential Job Performance Page for all modern presidents, including Roosevelt. Included are searchable data bases of approval ratings for all presidents since Roosevelt, from each of five major polling organizations. For Roosevelt, only Gallup provides this data, beginning in August 1937 early in the second FDR term. Gallup itself maintains a website, but no longer makes approval rating evidence readily available except via the occasional lead story.
CB Presidential Research Services maintains Presidents Rankings, Public Opinion Ratings, and Popularity with a wide variety of data and analyses based on approval ratings. Skip the presidential rankings and scan the 3rd through 7th items on their list of links. Included are several papers from Professor Paul Gronke and colleagues.
Since a great deal of analysis is now done at individual level with refined contexts, keep in mind Grace York's Statistical Resources on the Web-Political Science for other public opinion sites.
