USA Today's propaganda re: the economy

I just received this abridged version of a USA Today article titled, "Workers grow more confident". Now, that title would lead one to believe there are solid facts behind that. Some sort of confidence index, perhaps. Nope, check out the bold:

WASHINGTON, DC -- Firms haven't been quick to hire this year, but there are signs workers are growing more confident about the job market, suggesting better times might be on the way. One of those signs came Friday when the Labor Department said the percentage of workers who were jobless in May because they voluntarily quit -- not because they were laid off or fired -- rose to the highest level in nearly four years. A seasonally adjusted 12.3% of workers who were jobless in May had quit, up from 11.7% in April and the highest percentage since August 2001.

That suggests workers, many of whom have felt stuck in jobs they have been wanting to quit for years, are feeling more upbeat about prospects for finding new jobs. That makes them more willing to quit before they have new jobs lined up, giving them time to perfect their resumes, conduct thorough job searches and even to move to a new city.

"The job market is much improved, and people know it. They feel it," says Mark Zandi of Economy.com. "People are feeling more confident about finding another job if they leave their current employment."

Has there been a greater stretch into the unknown only to, essentially, call it fact? Well, WMDs aside, that is.

1. As you know, people are often give a chance to resign

under threat of being fired.

2. And everyone who's quit a job does so because they have a better one

all lined up and ready to go.

They don't quit for medical reasons. They don't quit to go to school. They don't quit as the job pays very low and offers no benefits. They don't quit because the workplace is too demanding of hourly workers while CEOs rake in millions. They don't quit because their family is moving someplace that has better prospects.

Often for PR purposes either external or internal people are often given the 'choice' to resign and if so they will receive severance.

for someone who falls for this kind of rosy portrait...in this day and age, if you quit a job without having another, well, all I can say is I hope you know what you're doing
