Why Iraq's buying up Sony PlayStation 2s
Intelligence experts fear games bundled for military applications

Many American kids may be disappointed on Christmas morning because the Sony PlayStation 2 they wanted wound up in Iraq.

Both the U.S. Customs Service and the FBI are investigating the apparent transfer of large numbers of Sony PlayStation 2s to Iraq, according to military intelligence sources.

A secret Defense Intelligence Agency report states that as many as 4,000 of the popular video game units have been purchased in the United States and shipped to Iraq in the last two to three months.

What gives? Does Saddam Hussein have an extraordinarily long Christmas shopping list? And why would U.S. military and intelligence officials be concerned about such a transfer?

2. Shows they aren't too bright.
An Xbox is easier to mod, and when set up properly can be a 733mhz, 200GB Linux desktop. More computer power than a PS2.

:P

3. Oh, 4000. Is that it?
Probably nothing more than the Px gathering supplies for a long stay. Too hot outside for our guys to play football on break.

Besides, American kids have plenty of used PS2s they can get, but most of them are likely waiting for the PS3.

I don't know why this is news.

4. Oh yeah. That was part of the PS2 hype
The whole "powerful enough to control nuclear missiles" fairy tale. A masterpiece by the Sony PR crowd.

Quite amazing ; they are trying the same trick with the PS3 and it does seem to work.

9. well
I do believe a group did turn them into a super computer of the low level sort once, i dont see why its so unbelieveable, take any number of computers and sooner or later you will have a decent one linked together.

i still think its all about grand theft auto ;)

7. well
PS2's are actually pretty powerful computers. I believe some group actually took some of them, linked them up, and created a low level supercomputer.

I admit I can see the possibilities in the wrong hands of turning a set of PS2s into use in nuclear proliferation perhaps...then again, Grand Theft Auto is pretty awesome ;) so who knows.
