lynchings that happened in the past; I guess this must be how they're ending that ugly chapter in U.S. history.

Well, if they're in an aplogizin' mood why don't they outlaw the Confederate Battle Flag's display? That's something they should have done years ago too.

7. This, and re-opening Till case is pure politics. See black voters, the GOP |
|
really, REALLY cares about your issues. No democratic President or Congress pursued this legislation....only Republicans care.
See...it doesn't cost them that much lucre to put up these symbolic acts. But, just remember when Clinton tried to get just 19 million added to the budget for afterschool to midnight programs for inner city kids with working parents. The Republicans voted it down. They did manage to find 70 million to investigate a blowjob, however.

8. This bill is carried by Democrats, as well as Republicans |
|
Edited on Mon Jun-13-05 04:27 PM by Mass
Including Kennedy, Leahy, Boxer, Corzine , Lautenberg, Dayton, and many others ....
Of course, we can decide that the cause is not worth it, as clearly some think, but frankly, I was not expecting that here.

12. The GOP only goes along with Dems when it benefits them politically. |
|
They will always point out that it was a Republican congress who passed it.
I don't begrudge the bill at all, just the way the Republicans will spin it and they will SURELY spin it.

At least, it is done. If you want to complain, complain about what is wrong with the way this bill is passed by some (voice-vote).
At least, Leahy has made a big deal of that before he spoke about Gitmo. I only wished that other Dems would do the same thing.

|
Edited on Mon Jun-13-05 05:11 PM by blm
it because that's what many of us are here for - to interpret the opposition's intent and to act as a counter to GOP spin.
Is that something you really want to attack or label just as complaining?

10. They tried to pass anti-lynching legislation over 200 times... |
|
between 1880 and 1952. None of them passed.
There were over 4,700 lynchings in that time period.
According to CNN.

So, we should oppose this bill?
I feel sorry that some of my fellow DUers are so deep in their personnal world that they cant simply say this bill is overdue.
If anything, I think that we should be outraged that it is going to be voted on voice-vote, meaning that some people do not want being on record having voted it, not outraged that this bill is going to help Republicans.

21. In DC, it's legal to have a necktie party |
|
since DC is not a State, it falls under Federal Jurisdiction. The reason it is a voice vote is those who have guilt over 9/11 might be seen as protecting themselves.

My feeling is that some people do not want to vote it, but know they cant do otherwise, period. Doubt Lott sees this bill happily.

making it a federal crime to aid and abet or commit acts in furtherance of...Basically make anyone who watches or even remotely participates in one.
Murder is still a crime and those perpetrating the act would be guilty.

I believe the word is 'archaic'.
Why don't they pass a law against unpolished Spittoons?
Isn't it clear that anyone and everyone with the exception of the lynched that is in anyway involved in a lynching, other than attempt to stop it, would be guilty of murder?
Has the law and its enforcement not evolved to the point where a law against murder by specific means is not required required?

Not an anti-lynching bill. It is a bill to apologize for not having passed an anti-lynching bill before. http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:s.res.00039:

I guess they wanted to wait until Zell Miller left so they could make it a unanimous vote :P.
It's going to be a voice vote though. That way Trent Lott can yell "no" without being on record.
