Does ANYONE Think MSM Is EVER Going To Get IT????
It seems that for years now we have been fighting an up hill battle and very little progress has been made.

Yesterday, when the "Jackson" thing was over I said to my husband... "I wonder what NEW fiasco is going to be created, as a diversion from the REALITY of what is happening here in America"? Does the word TRUTH even exist anymore? Does being held responsible for lying, cheating, misleading and conniving hold any water anymore??

How Long (Has This) MUST THIS Be Going On????

1. They're already "getting it."
Under the table from the GOP, in cash and favorable legislation.

4. Well... I KNOW That Answer...
I will make a small concession here. I watched Michael Duffey on C-Span this AM and he and Time have unearthed quite a document from the Pentagon about Gitmo.

They're still working on the story, however the Pentagon has ALREADY issued it's statement regarding this. It has LEGS... but that doesn't mean it won't get FUZZED by "The Corrupt Ones"!

2. Cartoonist Mike Luckovich gets it...see his "Smoking Gun" cartoon
of late, metaphorically speaking ! The only way to slip in the truth I guess is into the political cartoon pages; the print journalists would never question Operation Mockingbird !

Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 10:18 AM by goclark

that can get on the news by any means necessary.

It will take rallies at CNN

Our continued emails/boycotts of their products etc.

We can not give up seeking the TRUTH.

5. I think it's been going on forever.
Think about the Floyd Collins story in 1925, when he was trapped in the cave in Kentucky. We sometimes think of this as the first media circus, but that's probably because radio was newly widespread then.

I'm sure that since the beginning of civilization, shallow spectacle has been the most riveting occupation of the masses (consider the Roman circuses, hippodromes, gladiator fights.)

The only difference today is the immediacy of the delivery system.

7. To Some Degree, Yes....
You're correct in stating the "instant" message hype, but I'm a Boomer and I recall a different type of reporter. The Dan Rather's, Bill Moyers, Walter Cronkite's, the Howard Zinn's, the Daniels Ellsberg's.

Where are they now??? Sitting in their little air-conditioned cubicles scared to say MUM. Shut down with fear of retribution by "The Corrupt Ones"!

13. Good point, but perhaps the real "mainstream" audience for those worthies
wasn't as large or as tuned-in as are today's masses. After all, TV set ownership in the '50s and 60's was minuscule compared to now, and the technology and production values were primitive: Ed Murrow sitting in a chair across from his interviewee, interspersed with 60-second (or 90-second!!) commercials. The mouth-breathers during these days still went to county fairs and tent-show revivals for their entertainment, while the masters of television were waiting for videotape and computer graphics to be invented, so they could engage the masses on a truly visceral level. I remember 1981 or whenever MTV was born, realizing then that as a 30-something, I was being left behind by 1-second images flashing on the screen. Narrative and context were gone from television, and taking their place was Floyd Collins, permanently trapped in his cave.

6. I'm afraid never. Saw this morning that Katie Couric is having
an exclusive interview with the "wide-eyed" runaway bride from Georgia. A big, fucking promo on NBC. My God, men, women, and children dying in Iraq for a lie, and we get "reporting" like this.

Stop the presses. Wide-eyed bride to be interviewed. Downing Street Minutes, what the hell is that, and who cares???!!!!

8. Welcome To The Global Village
McLuhan was right, and in spades.

With our inter-connected televised world, many of us now have grown up with this box telling us what is cool, what is fun, what is sexy...also what is "right" and what is "important".

This is the box that had us sporting Beatle haircuts and buying Hot Wheels and Americans always were the good guys and always won. It's been a non-stop message that had now thrives on manipulation...and many who tune in all but demand that manipulation. They want the newest scandal, they want the next big thing...and the corporate media (who fed this frenzy in the first place) is more than happy to cash in and continue this fantasy world they have created and control.

These morality plays are easy to cover, easy to play with and get people emotionally interested...thus they tune in. War doesn't do that, unless it's dropping lots of bombs and things that go boom...we don't like to see the aftermath, especially if it involves our own. Anything more complex just doesn't work cause you can't make it sexy or violent. Plus the media has conditioned us that our own problems are personal...just tune in the tube to see someone's life that is worse than yours.

My hopes are the corporate media has taken a beating again...first with the over-the-top Schaivo games, then the Pope-A-Thon and now with messing up Jacko so badly that people are starting to view this less as information and more as distraction. People are finding different ways now to get their information.

11. HOPE???
Won't rain on that parade, but the word is almost obsolete anymore!

But maybe if we cross our fingers, get down on our knees and give praise to Allah, we'll get some attention! :sarcasm:

15. How Do You Like Your Lemon Chicken?
I like to think what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and wiser.

Yep, without hope what is there? I think we live in very confused times. But that's a bit better than the myopic one we lived in just a few months ago. It's a nuanced change, but it's a change and a start.

As long as you can see hundreds or thousands of people who have similar feelings you do in a place like this, there still is hope.

Cheers

16. Well I've ALWAYS Believed In Kharma (Karma)
However you want to spell it. I always spelled with the "h" before until someone razzed me!

I still think the "h" belongs there!

18. Good Things Happen For Good People
It might now always be when you want it, but I believe that when you help others your helping yourself in return. Call it "Good Kharma"

And yep, always have spelled it with the "h". As they say, spell it right, spell it wrong...just spell it...and make sure it's spelt right on the payacheck.

:hi:

Cheers!

19. I wish I could feel some hope. I suspect that even with the
internet, we are headed for something like the world in M.T. Anderson's novel "Feed".

10. Sure Someone in the MSM will get it.
But they'll be killed and eaten by the others...so it's really not a very adaptive trait.

14. Not as long as we have corporate conglomerate ownership of media
Money, not journalism, is the bottom line for corporate owned media. That's why you see the media sell hyped-up celebrity and personal interest stories, because that's what draws the ratings. Dump corporate ownership and that may change. Of course, the one exception is Fox News, which is purely a right-wing propaganda machine which really doesn't give a crap about profit.
