NBC Can Kiss My Ass
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 11:41 AM by lala_rawraw
In a stunning display of arrogance, bad journalism, and slapping down citizens and alternative media alike, NBC announced today that:

"But now, war critics have come up with seven more memos, verified by NBC News. One, also from July 2002, says U.S. military planners had given "little thought" to postwar Iraq."
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8207731

Let us just review this morsel a bit here:

1). "War Critics": referred to above, are exactly what group of people? Are they speaking of the citizen coalition group called After Downing Street made up of a hundred or so sub-groups which all have thousands upon thousands of citizen supporters each?

It may have missed Andrea's attention that various member groups of ADS have different goals and different focal points, ranging in voting rights reform, to ethical government, to forums such as this one. So, to simply call all of these people "WAR CRITICS" make it sound as thought all of these citizens, first and foremost, are upset about the war, in and of itself, floating outside of context and fact...

Could it be that THE FACT THAT WE WENT TO WAR ILLEGALLY, killing 100k+ innocent people there and god knowns what the real number of soldiers here in the process might be one of the reasons? Could it be that our country is responsible for torture and crimes against humanity? Andrea, you comfie with that one? War critics is a snide and easy way of saying "those people" without having to go into too much detail.

OR

Is she talking about the journalists who are reporting on this story? In which case they would simply be doing their job... reporting. Am I a war critic as a citizen of this country? I may or may not be, but that does not change the work that I do, because fact is still fact to me anyway. So is she saying reporters are not credible unless they report favorably on the war?

2). "Have Come Up": as Andrea states, makes it seem like we birthed these documents out of some far off magic land called... GOPUSA? Sorry, there are things called facts... anyone remember those? Well we deal in facts on this side of reality.

3). "Verified by NBC News": Wow, this has to be the best journalistic work I have ever seen in my life. I think I need rant on this element too long as we all either know or should know just how pissed I am right now. Hint: Andrea, just call me next time so you don't have to ruin your nail polish surfing through actual work done by actual reporters.

I think NBC needs to apologize to all involved, journalists on this story, advocates, and their readership as well.

This is almost as bad as when the AP called peace protesters "insurgents".

DU is one of the member groups of ADS... you war critics you, who came up with these damn documents...and made poor NBC have to verify them.

end of rant damn it.

edit: please feel free to express outrage to NBC for not looking into these documents ages ago as well as the above.

4. It's simple
The Iraq war was to get Bush war cajones for campaign. It was/is a political stunt. Maybe some in the geopolitical think tanks saw the move as strategically necessary (P.N.A.C.) but, bottom line, it is all politics.

5. I think this is a perfect "letter" to shoot over to Andrea...why not
let her hear what you have to say? It's well written. Speak up where it matters.

7. Concurring in part and dissenting in part.
"War critics" is a very poor choice of words. Ms. Mitchell could have simply framed it in the passive voice (Seven more memos, verified by NBC News, have emerged). Who came up with these memos is not as important as what they report.

I will be a little less harsh than you about "verified". NBC probably doesn't want to get into the pickle about verification of documents that CBS got into last Fall over Bush's National Guard record. When that was over, the White House was pleased to leave the impression that Bush served honorably in the TANG, which most of us know isn't the case at all. Many suspected that the White House planted a false document to discredit what was otherwise a true story; although that will probably never be proved, it certainly isn't beyond them. I would be very careful about verifying documents that show Bush regime duplicity. One false document and they will try to discredit the whole story and assert that it proves Saddam had a vast biochemical arsenal and masterminded the September 11 attacks.

I don't know what NBC News did to verify the documents, but I'm glad they did.

8. Mrs. Greenspan Also Used To Work At The Pentagon
She's still into the mindmeld double-speak that thrives inside the beltway. Totally out of touch with the real world...and she doesn't need to be.

Let's put the shoe on the other foot. Prior to the run-up to this invasion, people like Mrs. Greenspan and other corporate media types told us of secret documents and informants who spoke about Saddam's "rape rooms" and mass graves and weapon stockpiles and so on. These weren't "war aggitators" were they? Nope...they were "reliable sources".

This non-reporter is just hanging on to the camera time. She's kept around cause she "sleeps" with the money (Imus used that line about her once) and is usually kept on the cable channels now, since she's not quite the looker a Campbell Brown or Nora O'Donnell is. How cruel life is when you've sold your principals for those nuggets of fame.

Remember, admitting these minutes prove this war was pre-meditated is over the pale for the corporate media types at this point. They fear they'll lose their access...the invites to the drinkie-drinkie parties...they won't be able to "book" the name and get the mug time. It's all about Andrea...always has, always will.

Keep up the strong fight. We will eventually previal. Truth always takes time.

11. Hey, lala, could you spell out in a tiny bit more detail what
you are upset about in your point 3? I understand your points 1 and 2, but I'm not sure what the exact problem is in 3. Are you saying they should have detailed their verification process a bit more (I certainly would have liked it if they'd done that!) It's interesting, to me, anyway, they don't really say *what it is* that they've verified (apart from, you know, the 7 documents that "war critics" have "come up with".

...protest, because they knew the whole thing was a lie. Andrea's just now getting around to figuring out that we were bullshitted in to it. You'd never guess that their reporters all cash a check from General Electric every two weeks. You remember GE, don't you? They're the makers of such warm and fuzzy consumer products as military nuclear powerplants, Navy and Airforce jet engines, and the gatling guns for our Blackhawks.

This whole thing is fucking profiteering, and it stinks on ice.
