Why do they keep saying we're at war?
Iraq and Afghanistan both had elections of their own. The reins have been turned over to both countries. I would think that ended the war. What am I missing here?

2. Because the rules are different when you're at war.
So you perpetuate the war.

5. we're "at war" when i being at war suits their purposes
(eliminating civil liberties, demanding unswerving allegiance to war-time "presidents," etc.)

and we're not "at war" when that suits thier purposes
(torturing prisoners, denying Geneva Accord rights to prisoners, reducing taxes for the wealthy, etc.)

6. I think it has something to do with...
Al Qaeda and the idea that they are still trying to kill us here at home. The real question is, how do you know when this war is over?

And... How do you know whether you are winning or losing?

10. It's kinda like you're parents
"we'll see" when you wanted to do something as a child. Then they forget until it's too late.
All I can say is we're in the grip of madmen and can't seem to get loose.

8. It's the War on Terrorism...
Which will only end when we've wiped out the scourge of terrorism... which means, of course, that we will be at war for the rest of our lives, and our children's lives, and so on.

20. Maybe it'll end when we wipe out the scourge on the English
language out of the WH so we know once and for all what they are talking about.

But when then need the "we're at war" mentality, then we are still at war.

15. Terror!
It is a way to keep the "sheeple" in line. It allows for unfettered propaganda and the stripping of civil rights. The "war" is the "war on terrorism." It will never end while these bozos are in power.

18. "We're at war" for the purpose of any federal budget legislation
"We're winning the war" is reserved for campaign trail stops.

"The war is over" is something you will hear when hell freezes over.

21. When it's convenient for them to say we are 'at war', then we are at war
Like when they need to shut the people up who are questioning their answers. When it is inconvenient to be 'at war', like when the Geneva Convention comes up, we aren't at war. See?

23. It's Freudian, we are at war with ourselves
Militia Links
War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. — John Stuart Mill

24. It's the kind of war people need to be reminded they are in.
Otherwise, they might not think they were really at war any more. It don't walk like a duck or quack like one, so they have to remind us it really is a duck.

This is a vague, hand-waving, flashlight-under-the chin story-telling kind of war. It's sort of the Iraq war, but not really 'cause that's going south. It's the war the neocons mean when they say the word "war." They mean a vitally imperative war that we are winning thanks to their brilliant leadership. You know, the war in their heads.
