Many times when debating conservatives online I refer back to the
rise of Hitler. I don't do it to be mean, I do it because Hitler
was a warning to us all. He led his nation from a civilised
democracy with all its warts to a corrupted and corrosive hell that
killed tens of millions in war and murdered millions more in cold
blood.

Germans are not a unique people. And what befell Germany in the
30's can befall any nation at any time. Italy, France, Spain, the
UK and even America. Even America. Just like the Germans, we
aren't unique either. No national character flaw in Germans led to
Hitler, and no national virtue in us will protect us from our own
Hitler.

At some point in the formation of the Nazi party an innocent was
killed. A jew, a gypsy, a homeless man, a baker, whatever. That
person was killed and the Nazis who saw it looked away.

An innocent was killed to further their ideology. An ideology that
Germans were better than everyone else, that others were inferior,
that anything done to protect Germany; elevate Germany was
acceptable. And that included killing those they perceived as a
threat - right or wrong, innocent or guilty. >

5. Sounds like Rush Limbaugh's program.

Every day, year after year, Limbaugh preaches the ideology of 'conservatism.' That ideology says that (conservative) Americans are better than everyone else, that others are inferior and anything done to protect America, elevate America is acceptable. And that also includes killing those they perceive as a threat - right or wrong, innocent or guilty.

Limbaugh has been mocking the reports of torture in American run prisons in Cuba and Iraq. He has long demonized "feminazis," poverty-pimps and hate-America-firsters. Limbaugh has defined "liberal" as an enemy of the State who should be done away with. He adds that some liberals should be spared and treated like zoo animals to serve as examples to the rest of the population 'of what not to be.'

Limbaugh has been preaching out-and-out fascism for 14+ years and there has been little criticism. In fact, the MSM has lauded him.

7. Perhaps their first official murder based on

hatred was the murder of Marinus van der Lubbe, a communist and a Dutch national, whom they blamed the Reichstag fire on. Nazis hated communists like freepers hate Democrats.

8. Great book about just this subject. Written by a German Jew right after

WWII interviewing 'ordinary' Germans about why they thought nothing was wrong during the lead up to war and Hitler's rise to power. It's called 'They Thought They Were Free, the Germans 1933 - 45' by Milton Mayer.

9. "Germans are not a unique people" No, but they might as well be

since Hitler and the Nazis are the only ones who ever get any air time. Genocide and mass murder have been committed down through the ages all over the planet; perhaps the Neanderthals were the first victims.

I certainly don't think there's anything wrong with making the point that "it can happen here" -- in fact I believe it quite easily can, and at present it seems like it very well may, and soon. But the people who make this argument actually weaken it by only ever being able to present the single example of Germany from 1933-45.

Ah well, to twist the famous Voltaire saying, "If Hitler did not exist it would be necessary to invent him". Hitler brought dictatorship and genocide together in one big, sexy, jackbooted hollywood package that anyone can whip out at the drop of a hat to rail against anything from torture camps to a graduated income tax. And he sure has given TV and movie producers something to keep busy with for the past 60 years.

But I'm just bitter because everyone has rejected my screenplay on the Albigensian Crusade. :cry:
