Gary Bauer blames MSM for recruitment woes
www.dailykos.com (As kos says, nowhere in this diatribe does Bauer call for his white Christian wingers to join up.) Go read....

War preacher on recruitment
by kos
Tue Jun 14th, 2005 at 12:31:56 PDT

Gary Bauer opens trap (from email newsletter):

"The U.S. military is having trouble filling its ranks right now, and the "mainstream" media can barely hide their glee. The recruitment difficulties are seen as one more piece of evidence that "Bush's war" in Iraq is illegitimate and a failure.

Of course, it shouldn't be surprising that the increase in enlistments that took place after September 11th have faded in the last year. If you are an 18 year-old American watching the news you seldom, if ever, hear about a heroic U.S. soldier who rescues a wounded comrade, captures a terrorist thug or saves the lives of civilians - even though those things are happening every day.

On the other hand, every young American has seen countless hours of coverage of Abu Ghraib prison guards on their way to jail, and demonstrators calling U.S. soldiers war criminals.

The U.S. armed forces have liberated two nations, Afghanistan and Iraq, and 56 million people have had the first opportunity in their lives to vote for their own leaders. But all we see on the news are stories highlighting the inevitable mistakes, blunders and setbacks of war."

3. christian conservatives can't enlist
They are too busy driving around town showing off their Yellow Magnets. And they have to go to church on sunday to get instructions about who to hate and who to boycott.

6. Bauer was born in 1946
which would have made him prime meat for Viet Nam. Notable that he didn't enlist to go and liberate that country. Just another of those "Let's you and him fight" Repugs.

"demonstrators calling U.S. soldiers war criminals"
Haven't seen that.

Maybe he is looking at 35 year old footage.

So why isn't he recruiting Congressional members' kids?
Why isn't he recruiting at "Christian" churches around the country?

If those are the areas of support, that's where they should be focusing.

Or, *gasp*, is he admitting, indirectly, that old-school recruiting techniques focusing on the poor and underprivileged aren't cutting it anymore?

9. Gary, you have been recruited to serve in Iraq! Your duties will be
to serve pancakes for breakfast in Baghdad's main street. You will flip at the opportunity, just like you did during your Presidential campaign! And, one more thing.Take Mr. One Percent Alan Keyes with you.

10. Bauer should sign up all those young Republicans who voted for W because

they claimed he was a GREAT commander-in-chief.

I can guarantee that more young men would have enlisted if Kerry were in office, based on their belief that Kerry had a CLUE and understood the military in ways Bush chose to avoid when given the opportunity. Kerry was an EXAMPLE of how to serve your country in war and towards peace.

12. Went to his site, emailed him,
and called him and his followers cowards. I explained that I realize that he is most likely too old to enlist, as am I, but many of his followers aren't so put up or shut up. You see, I have a son who was in the military but was discharged many years ago and some dear friends of mine have their oldest son over there. They don't, which makes them hypocritical cowards in my book.

13. I agree with him
The MSM ought to be showing more live coverage of the conditions in Iraq.

In fact, I think they should set up live webcams in downtown Baghdad, enroute to the airport, Mosul, Fallujah, etc, so people can see first hand how pleasant it is there. The military should install them, and run live streaming of it on their websites. I'm sure they'd see a huge jump in recruitment levels, if only people could see first hand what a difference we've made, and what the life of a soldier is like.

That's what he wants, right? Unfiltered information?
