If I just say tomorrow is "ELDERLY APPRECIATION DAY"
will it happen? I think tomorrow should be elderly appreciation day just for the hell of it.

What happens on that day? Well, uh, how about you visit an elderly neighbor that you know. Help out someone elderly with a task they cannot handle by themselves (like fix air-conditioning, very important). Maybe call an elderly aunt, uncle, mother, father, grandfather that you haven't talked to in a while.

Shit yeah, I like that idea, what do you think? Should June 15th be Elderly Appreciation Day?

1. How about we all attempt to do such kindnesses routinely?
Then we don't need another stupid calendar date designated to tell us what to do.

2. Yeah, unfortunately.
An elderly friend of mine doesn't get phone calls from her kids. They don't have a bad relationship with her. They just don't call. Ah, if people did things like that routinely what a world this would be.

3. We can all use reminders.
I just think we have enough designated "special" dates when everyone thinks doing one thing on that day fulfills their obligation and they can safely forget about it for another year.

I've come to really despise designated days because in the final analysis, all they end up as are marketing opportunities for more manufactured crap, with little or no substance behind the obligatory gesture/expenditure which ends up being judged (as usual) on its dollar value.

There has to be a better way. Maybe a little genuine mindfulness of other people? It's a state of mind that leads to calls and kind actions. Not the calendar.

Oh... and thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to call my aunt for the past couple of days.... :D

5. It was a worthy thought.

Maybe instead we should revive that old bumper sticker concept that said, "Practice random acts of kindness and senseless beauty." We could sure stand to see (and do) some of those lately!
