Gary Bauer blames recruitment woes on the media.
War preacher on recruitment
by kos
Tue Jun 14th, 2005 at 12:31:56 PDT

Gary Bauer opens trap (from email newsletter):
The U.S. military is having trouble filling its ranks right now, and the "mainstream" media can barely hide their glee. The recruitment difficulties are seen as one more piece of evidence that "Bush's war" in Iraq is illegitimate and a failure.
Of course, it shouldn't be surprising that the increase in enlistments that took place after September 11th have faded in the last year. If you are an 18 year-old American watching the news you seldom, if ever, hear about a heroic U.S. soldier who rescues a wounded comrade, captures a terrorist thug or saves the lives of civilians - even though those things are happening every day.

On the other hand, every young American has seen countless hours of coverage of Abu Ghraib prison guards on their way to jail, and demonstrators calling U.S. soldiers war criminals.

The U.S. armed forces have liberated two nations, Afghanistan and Iraq, and 56 million people have had the first opportunity in their lives to vote for their own leaders. But all we see on the news are stories highlighting the inevitable mistakes, blunders and setbacks of war.

The amazing thing isn't that there is a recruitment shortfall. The amazing thing is that with such a hostile media culture and the universal disdain of our elites, the American military, as it always has, is getting the job done!

2. "Capture a Thug!" "Rescue a Wounded Comrade!"
Yes, I can see the ad campaign now. I'm sure the enlistment centers will be buzzing by week's end.

3. Well, Gary, why should we be spending our money liberating
anyone? Did Iraq attack us? No. For that matter, did Afghanistan attack us? Now as far as we can tell, Osama Bin Laden is PERHAPS holed up there, but we were attacked...hell, I am not sure who attacked us on 911.

Osama Bin Laden. now theres a blast from the past.

9. He is right .
In a way.

The media helped start this war by repeating Bush's lies as fact, w/o investigation.

The lack of recruitment is the fault of those who started this war (Bush/media) w/o a plan.

11. that's why I almost agree with him in an Orwellian Newspeak way
the" liberal media" (GE, NBC, Saudi holdings in Disney, ABC etc. ) helps promote an illegal war and "the army of one" myth.

12. He left out a very important observation
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 04:06 PM by Horse with no Name
That these 18-year olds sit around watching the Abu Ghraib photos--but what scares them more than the pics--is the fact that the BUCK STOPS WITH THE ENLISTED GUYS!
They are the ones going to prison for carrying out the dirtywork of Rummy and Company.
I seriously doubt any of those grunts brought dog collars and whips to Iraq with them.

13. But I thought Young Repubs watched FOX & listened to Rush.
Could there must be some OTHER reason why young Repubs are too scared to sign up?

Which Republican news sources are telling these Young Republicans bad things about the war, I wonder???

15. First lie: "increase in enlistments" immediately after 9-11
It was shown later that there was NO change in the number of enlistments post 9-11.
