We shouldn't wish death or harm on Fred Phelps for picketing her funeral
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 11:19 PM by Selatius
I'm talking about Carrie French's military funeral.

Someone like Fred Phelps is there to challenge your principles, and if you stoop down to the level of hating him and wishing him ill will, you will become, in a sense, as violent as he is in his hatred and intolerance of you for the ideas you yourself hold.

You can disagree with this man. You can vehemently disagree with the man, but I'm imploring people not to let their emotions cloud their better judgment on this issue. Do your absolute best to hold onto your reason and your principles.

Carrie French is dead now, and her funeral is a time of mourning, not a time of anger and not a time for revenge and not a time for hate.

There is a time for everything, but a funeral is not the place. On such days, you are supposed to bury your fallen, not fight.

Fred Phelps is using Carrie French's funeral to attack others. I guess what I'm saying is that we shouldn't go and use her funeral as an occasion as well to spew hatred back at him.

"Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted."

3. I sort of agree.
But what he does goes way beyond challenging. He is a hateful spiteful sub human piece of trash. It doesn't challenge it polarizes.

5. With me
I may have some anger and disgust but I just let God worry about his little booty. Karma is a nice thing. I'm sure he has a nice karma coming in his future whether this life or another one.

8. All I can say
as someone who has seen them daily since they started this is the very worst thing you can do to this guy is ignore him. He caused all kinds of trouble here until the city just gave up and we all just drive or walk by without comment, without looking and gawking at them. Does it piss us off, oh hell yes it does. Still, all he wants is attention. Just watch his behavior. He is all about getting air time.

You all will do whatever you feel you must but I thought I would throw this out one more time or however many times it needs to be said. Just experience speaking here and a note not to give him what he wants, attention.

9. We, in Idaho, will take care of Carrie
The governor has said the flag will fly at half-mast from sunrise to sundown on the day of her internment.

Her father is one heck of a man who won't tolerate the likes of Phelps. We've already had a run in with the guy about the 10 Commandments. Our own religious dominated his freaks. He and his kind were empowered by the Bushies.

Carrie's cemetery is in a quiet knoll. A beautiful quiet place. Mr. Phelps will NOT be allowed to move 18 inches. Believe me.

10. At the funeral of Randy Shilts, author of And the Band Played On
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 11:28 PM by Jack Rabbit
Phelps and his ghouls ran into a counter demonstration outside the Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco while Shilts' funeral was in progress. He turned around and left.

Rev. Cecil Williams, presiding over the services, was informed of events and announced to the mourners, "Rev. Fred Phelps has come and Rev. Fred Phelps has gone." The mourners applauded.

Randy Shilts would have been pleased.

him, I would not consider it disrespectful to do whatever they wanted to him. I would be egging them on, posthumously :)

13. were i related to ms french, i'd bust an iron pipe upside phelps' head
go ahead and be a pacifist if it suits you. others will have to protect you from the lions, and phelps represents lions come to eat us all.

i don't cotton much to ideas that other people are there to challenge my principles and that somehow good will triumph over evil, because it usually doesn't. some folk are just plain bad and i guess i'll let jesus turn the other cheek for the both of us, because i won't when it comes to sons a bitches like phelps.

the man and his so-called god squad need a severe ass whipping.

garden variety death or harm is far too pleasant for him.
I do not believe in karma, energy, or any other superstition.

29. I'm with kodi
If it were my relative or loved one's funeral he were picketing at, the police would have a hard time keeping me away from him.

That said, it's worth keeping in mind that it's all too easy to make this sick fuck a martyr.

30. Has the Golden Rule gone out the window?
Fred Phelps is a man who is easy to wish death upon, but you shouldn't expect much in return if you wish death and harm upon others regardless of what you think of said person. Fred Phelps can say I'm going to hell, that I deserve to die like Carrie French, but I wouldn't wish that kind of fate upon him or any other soul.

Everyone was given as much right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as anyone else. With that said, who is it that can judge another man as not worthy of any of those? Who can deal life and death? The same kind of reasoning I'm trying to get across here is the same kind of reasoning that led me to oppose the death penalty.

Hating Fred Phelps won't make things better. It'll just be another thing that adds fuel to the fires that seem to be consuming all of mankind.

Believe me. At first impulse, I'd want to throw Phelps into a world of misery. It would feel so good to hurt him and even make him cry, especially for violating the peace of a funeral, but that's my darker half that I've chosen not to listen to. There's a better half of me that I've chosen to follow instead.

I can't say I'll be able to maintain myself if someone I loved was killed out of hate or died in a war, but it's a test of my soul that I'm willing to accept. I'd rather try to be a better person than just let myself be consumed by the same hate that consumed Phelps long ago.

To be honest, I can't say I truly love Phelps as a human being, but on the same token, I wouldn't wish misery and death upon him either even if he did so to me.

31. Phelps really is a Democrat
Gay caucus meets for first time

"The Democratic tent includes the Rev. Fred Phelps Sr., the state's best known anti-gay advocate. Phelps is a registered Democrat who ran unsuccessfully for the party's gubernatorial nomination in 1990, 1994 and 1998 and for the U.S. Senate in 1992."

Very strange.
