Do you ever get the feeling that the major media chooses which stories to cover based on which places are the best vacation spots?

Qualify that to say "major" media, and I'll agree.
The hottest vacation resort I ever went to was Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains and that's because the newspaper I for which I worked for 8 years was the local paper in that area. :)
