Howard Kurtz blasts the media
Link to WaPO article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/linkset/2005/04/11/LI2005041100587.html

<snip> It's official: The Democrats are fed up with the press.

From the day George W. Bush won the Florida recount, resentment toward the MSM has been building on the left, to the point where it may well match the intensity on the right. Liberal bias? Ha! These journalists roll over for conservatives and beg to have their tummies scratched .<>

<snip>Nation Editor Katrina van den Heuvel told me that the failure to adequately cover the Downing Street memo "epitomizes the timidity, the cowardice of a media that has been manipulated, intimidated, bullied by an administration that has taken it to a high level." Frank Rich says the episode lays bare the problems of the "lapdog news media."<>

Try not to move your curser over the ad to the right. It's annoying.

2. I wouldn't exactly call it "blasting"
"The bottom line is this: There's still a huge amount of post-Iraq anger out there toward Bush, and liberals are frustrated that the red part of the country doesn't share their view. So the press must be doing a lousy job, right?

The press performance in covering this tightly disciplined administration has been far from perfect, especially on Iraq. But it's worth remembering that during the Clinton years, it was conservatives who saw the media as being embarrassingly soft on the White House."

In other words: It's not the media, it's the liberals. Oh, and it's somehow still Clinton's fault.

4. Kurtz won't call Bush a liar, but he's not afraid to call Pelosi one
read this:

"While also raising what she herself described as a 'litany' of core Democratic issues -- such as education, healthcare and the environment -- the House Democratic leader made striking comments about the mainstream media, even asserting that reporters had told her journalists couldn't tell the Democrats' story because they feared losing access.

" 'I've had reporters say to me, I have orthodontia, I have tuition, I have mortgage, I need access, I'm not writing your story,' Pelosi remarked. . . .

" 'If you depend on the print press, they will either leave you out of the story, or mischaracterize what you are saying, or you get two sentences in a twenty-five paragraph story which doesn't give weight to the argument that you have.' "

Some thoughts: I seriously doubt that journalists told Pelosi they needed to maintain "access" to the administration to pay their mortgages, since even the best reporters have little inside access to the Bushies, who generally read from the same set of talking points. When The Post asked Peolsi, she said one younger reporter had said this -- one probably too young to have a mortgage.

the Media Whores. Hey, Howie when are you going to disclose your wife works for a prominent Republican PR firm and worked to get "Ahhhnold" elected in CA? Hmmmmm....Hmmmmm...

7. watching his segment with katrina on sunday i have to give howard credit
it really was a fair forum. katrina was able to speak basically uninterrupted and took most of the time.
john fund didnt really put up much of a fight and howard was neutral in his presenting and asking

now opening the segment with hilary admonishing the press may not be seen as neutral but the rest of it was katrina and he either likes her or was in a particularly giving mode.

course she did call him "howie" at one point... they must be pretty friendly as most all people seem to be in washington politics
i dont know how but thats another story

16. I agree that Katrina was wonderful...but I don't credit Howie for having
her on. Howie's producers "manage him" and they could see that by allowing Howie to look fair by giving some airtime to Katrina they could counteract all the e-mails we are sending CNN call their reporting "Biased."

Just remember that Howie's wife is a Major Repug Operative. She worked to get "Ahhhhnold" into the Governor's Office in CA... Howies is a very clever "OPERATIVE." IOW's ...he knows how to "play the game."

Katrina was really good...she's learned to shout them down..and I think that must be really hard for her to do...as it would be for most of us having to defend ourselves against such duplicitous sharks.

8. Whorie Kurtz...All You Need To Know
Yep...how about it...he never mentions his wife is a Repugnican PR operative...or that his paycheck is tied to several large corporations and he's the "judge" of these corporations. Fox meet henhouse. Pot meet kettle.

It's Kurtz who also spent time on that same show trying to pile on Hillary Clinton (a longtime hard-on for this loser) and, of course, framing Howard Dean as some wildman from Borneo again. Corruption by Repugnicans? Those are either allegations or charges by Democrats (said in a tone of sour grapes). This show went to hell the day Bernard Kalb was aced out by Kurtz and became his own little morality forum.

Kurtz also has enabled this regime endlessly...regularly stacking his panel with corporate and right wing hacks and allowing them to spew their talking points unchallenged. Van Den Huevel is one of the rare breed who get to appear on these shows...most times the Democrat point of view is by some "moderate" or a "journalist" attempting to play Democrat (thus enhancing that "media is liberal" crap Kurtz claims he knows nothing about. Hypocrtical bastard.

9. Geez, every time I think he couldn't be a bigger asshole...
he proves me wrong. He is beyond disgusting, imo, and has NO credibility on any issue, especially as a 'neutral' observer of the media as he so badly pretends to be on the farcical "Reliable Sources" program on CNN.

11. Ack! Please don't post thread titles that are so misleading.
I ended up reading it thinking Howie had at last seen the light. Imagine my surprise to find out the thread title should have been: "Howie blasts dems, again."

Yawn.

12. A fellow DUer drew a terrific toon about the lapdog press ...
a couple of years ago.

I wish I could find it. It goes well with Howie's column.
