AAAGH! my head-in-the-sand conservative mom drives me NUTS!
my Reagan Democrat parents, who, despite raising 4 children who wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire, voted twice for President Presenile Dementia. they SAY they don't subscribe to a newspaper anymore, & they don't watch FOX news. i know for a fact they DO listen to WLW (if anyone is in cincinnati they know what i mean).

i offered to buy them a subscription to the NYTimes, but my mom said, and i quote: "I don't want to read anything that's so slanted one way."

to which i responded "I read the NY Times every day. Do you mean that it is slanted in favor of corporate power?"

She doesn't know what the fuck she is talking about, & is, in fact, PROUD OF THIS. I just have to give it up & expect nothing. then when they admit, on their deathbeds 20 years from now, that i was right all along & bush was a fascist & a puppet, i'll be really really zen & say, that's ok, no big deal, i still love you.

2. I have kept mine quiet for years
I just uttered one simple question....

"Do you ever want to see your grandchildren again?"

She of course answers "yes."

My response?

"Well, then - SHADDAFUCKUP!"

She hasn't polluted my airspace with right wingery ever since.

I won't allow my children to be exposed to filth like that - EVER.

7. in her case, its willful ignorance
she is 65, and has never READ the NYT, but dismisses it like an 8 year old dismisses brussel sprouts.

sure, its slanted, but in favor of corporations & power.

i just don't get how i came from those genes. i'm up for anything!

5. Your parents will come around?
My parents went from conservative republicans to Bleeding heart liberals in about 2 years after 9/11. The thing is, they're both insane.

Two months ago they revealed to me that they had also converted to Paganism and had joined some kind of nature group so...

If only you could be so lucky.:eyes:

over an ostrich with its head in the sand.

they took me to an anti-vietnam march back in like 1969, i think. i was little, but i remember it clearly. i haven't forgot her necklace that said "war is not healthy for children & other living things".

where did THOSE parents go?

12. Lack of marijuana and a boring sex life...
Perhaps you should get them the Karma Sutra, 10 viagra, and a bag o' weed. They'll use it eventually.

6. a lot of people were fooled by Reagan - still are, in fact
hey max - just avoid politics with your mom - asshole politicians will come and go but you've only got one mom - don't give conservative brainwashers the power of destroying your relationship - let it go and yes, on her deathbed you will say I love you. :)

8. Have them watch "Manufacturing Consent"
it is matter of factly laid out, and really pretty irrefutable. I mean, WHY would NY Times be left-wing?

9. You only get one mother
and she's not going to change to suit you. You have a choice: either be cruel and cut her out of her life because she's wrong about Bush or realize that you're probably wrong about a lot of things, too, and accept her right to be who she is, including wrong about politics.

It's very rare that parents need to be disowned, and then only in cases of ongoing abuse. Some people get born into real freak shows of families, and it may be better for them to withdraw, at least until they get their own heads on straight.

Being wrong about politics and accepting a bill of goods from some of the slickest salesmen on the planet is small potatoes. She may eventually come around, but don't expect her to admit it to you.

10. Just remember, you get to decide which home to put her in.
Maybe you need to remind her of that fact.
