It is contained in a national energy bill that is up for debate in Congress.
"The federal government does share royalties with coastal states — more than $3 trillion to date, in fact. Changing this amount only increases the budget deficit and diminishes the benefit the rest of the nation receives from these national resources," Scott Milburn, the office's press secretary, said Wednesday.
Gov. Kathleen Blanco has called revenue-sharing the best source of funding to fix the coast, which scientists say could lose another 700 square miles of wetlands by 2050 if nothing is done.
Blanco said in a statement Tuesday that the Bush administration's stance was "offensive," adding it was unfair that states that allow drilling on their land receive billions in royalties while coastal states that suffer consequences from offshore drilling do not get as much.
