Conversation with my aunt last night-God, love/hate/*Moonies.
Edited on Thu Jun-16-05 04:01 AM by Skidmore
My aunt called last night and we covered a lot of territory. She's in her early seventies and pretty religious in a fundamentalist kind of way. She's a goodhearted soul and hasn't been much farther than a 50 mi. radius from her birth home for much of her life. In 2000, she saw * as "sent by God." In 2004, she wasn't so certain and voted for Kerry. We've had several conversations over the past few years and she is really confused at times, as are her fellow congregants, about the mixed messages on morality that * sends. Currently, they have decided that Jesus taught us that God loves all his creation and that we are not to judge so they will not participate in any hate talk about gays and will extend their fellowship to all people. She kept talking to me about the level of hatred in the country now and how everyone in her circle of friends are very concerned about it. She's definitely certain that all of this "is not of God." She also told me that the church invited an evangelist or speaker from another church a couple of weeks ago, who told them that the economic problems they are experiencing in the area (plant closings primarily) are because that "too many" of them were Democrats. As she told me, "we aren't stupid." Anyway, this time I worked into the conversation the parallels of extremism and fanaticism in Christianity and Islam--how fanaticism is really a doctrine of hate and fear. I also, for the first time, brought up the televangelists and their corruption. She didn't know about Robertson's mines and the slave labor they use. She also didn't know about Falwell and his connection to Moon, and I told her about how some of our legislators had crowned Moon. She was appalled and said she wants to read more about this. She also wants to talk to her fellow congregants. Does anyone have a link to some materials that are not heavily ladened with commentary (profanity) that might of use for my auntie? She is very receptive to learning more and to discussing this with her friends.

2. How wonderful that she is open to learning more
Most people who once enshrined * will badmouth him ever so gently and then refuse to discuss the issues or concerns of the day. I honestly believe it will be the older generation who pull their heads out of the sand first.

Good for you for helping her out. Sounds like that act will influence many. And it sounds like she believes what you're telling her. That makes it easier to show her more. The Repukes I meet just say I'm full of it if I try to explain something they've never heard of. It gets so frustrating, I give up trying to "cast my pearls before swine," to quote a nice Fundy saying....

I'll kick for the morning crew :kick:

3. Here is an article on Moon being crowned
I'm sure other DUers can fill you in on more... didn't Moon also deal with North Korea?

Syung Mung Moon Crowned King in US Senate Building
Well - apparently America really is a Christian Nation - but it's the Moonies who have officially been chosen by the US Government to be the official state religion. On March 23rd 2004 Moon was officially crowned messiah by Congress in the Senate Dirksen Office Building.

What's scary is - why don't you see this in the news media? Maybe this is why it feels like America is one big cult - because it is! America is being run by the Moonies and they own a lot of Americas press uncluding United Press International (UPI) and The Washington Times. When the government crowns Sun Myung Moon king, (Moon spokesman explains moon corination cerimony - windows media format) recognizes Moon as messiah, and supports his campaign to replace the Cross with the Crown - don't you think that Christians would want to know that?

If this isn't a reason to support the separation of church and state I don't know what is. There are those out there who believe that America is a Christian nation. Well - apparently from this they are right. But the dominate flavor of Christianity is the Moonies. It's the Unification Church that is the brand of Christianity that is pulling the governments strings.
